Quirigua is about ninety minutes from Rio Honda and double that from Copan, even though Copan is only about 35 miles by a crow's flight. It is one of the best collection of stellae in Guatemala, all from a single king who began as a subordinate city to Copan, then conquered Copan and executed its king Eighteen Rabbit, claimed he... Quirigua is not too big, and it is a bit out of the way, though if you are visiting Copan then it shouldn't be too hard to cross the border into Guatemala and see Quirigua. Quirigua is one of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Guatemala - the other two are Tikal and the city of Antigua. Quirigua merits this... More

The stellae and other carvings here are indeed marvelous; and if you have your own transport, it seems silly not to come here if you are going from points south towards Rio Dulce, or from Rio Dulce downwards. We got there on our own, in a mixture of mini-vans and buses, which was a bit tricky, but we managed it... More

It took me half day but what a great quality time to visit this Mayan wonder legacy! When you arrive to this quiet wonder give you the feel that you are in a secret mayan great treasure. I was a female solo traveler & I went to Quirigua from Rio Dulce by public transportation. I took 4 buses, but it... More

Untill visited, I was not aware to the beauty , quality and uniquenwss of the stelaes presented there. Compare to what we saw in Tikal and Aguateca they are preserved. A surprizing experience. Definetly recommende, even if you make a special drive only to Quirigua. Recommended to take a guide that know the Mayan caligrafy and can explain the simbols... More

The site is very small, but since the stelae were carved from sandstone and not limestone, the hieroglyphs are still in excellent condition. More

A small, quiet site - no other visitors when we were there. The carved stellae, including one which is the largest uncovered in the Mundo Maya, suggest this was a city much larger than indicated by the structures restored to date. It would be interesting to see more of the mounds uncovered and the structures restored. Unfortunately the museum was... More

This was my first archaeological site in Guatemala. I really enjoyed it. It was small and easy to go through, which was great because I wasn’t intimidated by the size. There is a fee, different for locals and nationals, and a local museum. In the parking lot there are indigenous people selling some of their crafts and others selling fresh... More

Honestly, one of my favourite Mayan sites. So different to Tikal, Yaxha, Nakum and the more northern sites. Quirigua came into prominance during a later period and is more closely linked in style to the Honduras site, Copan. The main reason to visit is to see the huge stelae. Massive monoliths, several metres high, covered in carvings - many showing... More

Our second stop on a week long cruise. We booked this trip through NCL and I for one, am so glad we did! The smaller boat was berthed behind the NCL Spirit, so all we needed to do was have our ticket in hand, and off for a wonderful ride up the Dulce River. It's amazing, and quite humblng to... More
