This is one of the oldest temple in TN and well worth an overnight stay. Would recommend two visits : first at sunset to get blessed by the resident elephant and soak up the temple atmosphere during the evening pooja. Then again at 7am as soon as it opens and the temple is cool & people free so that you... more

Thanjavur was founded ( 850-871 ) by the Cholas.Rajaraja I made Thanjavur to the most powerful city in South India...and remarkable he had a big seafleet,which sailed to Srivijaya ( Indionesia..big forgotten Hindu Kingdom ).The expansion of this kingdom included Burma and Malaysia ,too.Later no Hindu sailed to sea as the caste laws forbade this.
