As other reviewers have indicated, this is one sight in Libya not to be missed. Try to get there as early as possible: I went there shortly after the gates opened at 0800 and had the entire place to myself for an hour and a half, with not even a security guard in sight. The amount and quality of the artifacts is amazing. But more amazing is that you will be the only person at the site. I almost felt guilty--like I was sneeking around a closed museum. Take anything you may need as there are few facilities. Wear a good hat--there is no shade in the middle of the desert!! more

Stunning place to go. With the lack of any real tourists there to see it, it simply looks like a city deserted and forgotten. Amazing restorations and remains, amphitheatre simply stunning, very easy to stand in the main street with nobody around and imagine you are really there in the early centuries. I went to Libya in October 2006 on an organised tour with EXPLORE Tours. Just back Oct 05. Give yourself two days to visit the site. Although a visit to the museum is useful its no where as good as the Red Fort museum in Tripoli.
