This university run museum is wonderful. Consistently changing exhibits make it more of a gallery, but that's fine. The annual "North of the 45th" show draws talent from near and far, and always displays some incredible talent. Occasionally a music venue as well, it's been host to some breathtaking performances.

For a small town such as Marquette, the DeVos offers a wide variety of programing and a fantastic array of different art opportunities. I would have assumed there were at least a dozen people behind the scenes making this place run. For such a limited staff they do fantastic work. Definitely a sparkling gem for the Marquette community.

We recently visited to see the exhibit of artists from North of the 45th Parallel. A juried show, it had some outstanding art from people from Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The surprise was also viewing artwork from the permanent collection including a series of Hiroshige woodblock prints from Japan.

To be truthful, I initially considered giving a rating of 2/5. But some of my disappointment may have been tied to poor timing. When I visited, the main exhibit was artwork from the area school children. And while some of the children are very talented, and the quilt made of self-portaits of the students (and portraits of teaching/school staff), I... More

I don't mean to give this museum a poor rating but, honestly, there was not much on display. We were told that they only display a small portion of there permanent collection at any one time. (I thought that a permanent collection was always on display?) Again, do not mean to complain--admission is free, it is on the contained campus... More

This museum features interesting contemporary architecture. Some of the contemporary exhibits are too trendy but the permanent collection is quite good for a museum of its' size.

Although we've visited Marquette regularly for several summers we were not aware of the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University until this trip. The Museum is attached to the building that houses the NMU School of Art and Design and is nestled toward the back of the campus. There is convenient reserved parking in front of the entrance (and... This is a small art museum on the campus of Northern Michigan University. It does not charge admission but seems to have been established as an outlet for students and local artists or people from NMU or Marquette who want to display a significant amount of their work. We have only been there twice and once for a student exhibition.... More

Outstanding artist, NMU instructor. Museum has many fine exhibits throughout the year. A must see for anyone visiting the Marquette area. Permanent collection also very good. Museum is less than fifteen years old and has a great future. Nothing like it north of Escanaba or east of Green Bay.
