- Tiffany F1 contributionFirst time and definitely won't be the last....Went to Holland State Park for the first time while visiting Grand Rapids for a few other events and to take in a few other attractions for the weekend. Had a beautiful time... the beach was clean and peaceful, parking was plentiful and there were restroom and concession facilities available. We went in the evening on a Saturday and it was not crowded at all. Will be adding this to our list of beaches to visit on the regular.Visited June 2023Written June 6, 2023
- John KVersailles, Indiana17 contributionsWhat a great SunsetLove the views of Lake Michigan. We got a great nite for a romantic sunset. Park is well kept. Facilities are also excellent. Lots of young couples and families enjoyed the evening but still plenty of privacy. Oh and the SUNSET didn't disappoint either we enjoyed our 46th anniversary vacation in Holland Michigan!Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 11, 2023
- Terri McTYpsilanti, Michigan2 contributionsBeautiful BeachThis was our first visit. Beach was beautiful, room to spread out. Bathrooms were very clean. Enjoyed everything about our trip, took our cooler in along with our umbrella. The only thing to note is online it states there is a day pass available for $9.00, this has been discontinued. You have to purchase a pass good for the season for $18.00 unless you have a recreation pass already! It was worth the money though. We didn’t try the snacks from concession but everything I saw looked good!Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 24, 2023
- Ruth HEdgewood, Kentucky96 contributionsBeautiful ParkWe visited the State Park not knowing what it would be like. The beach area is wonderful. We got to walk out on a pier area and view the beautiful homes and boats that are docked in this area. It was definitely a great find.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten August 25, 2023
- Bill HWestfield, Indiana158 contributionsWonderful place to enjoy one of the "Beach Towns" of Michigan!Wonderful beach with beautiful views of Lake Michigan. The beach has several paved paths to help with accessibility for better views of the "Big Red" lighthouse and watch the boats go out onto the lake. The is a concession stand and multiple restrooms. Great place to spend a couple of hours as you look at the lake.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 2, 2023

Way overcrowded, had some trash on it. The water to wash off your feet was turned off. A little green slime in the water (algae I assume).
We had paid online for RV camping in the State Park Campground, and when we got there, they hit us with another $9 day use facilities fee. What the heck? When you pay to stay in a state park, there is no way to avoid being in the state park. This was like bait and switch on the price.
$9 for a beach to share with 2000 of my closest friends..... nah.

Traveled down this packed road to take a peek at big red lighthouse. Traffic was backed up due to the hot summer day. ☀️ lighthouse is on the other side of the lake so we couldn’t access it or it didn’t look like we could from this beach without getting wet. We had elderly people with bad knees so we ended up turning around once we got up to the entrance. Would love to visit again without the grandparents.

If you're planning to spend a few hours to the whole day at the beach, it's worth every penny of the entrance fee ($10 when we visited). The beach is big, clean and friendly. There was plenty of space to sun, get wet, walk out to the end of the breakwater and change back into dry clothes at the end. If you're just going to check it out, but not stay long, park outside of the entrance and walk in on the trail that follows the channel from the lake.

Horribly managed park. To save money they do not staff the parking booths, but then come by your car later and make you drive to the Ranger's station to pay for your parking permit. And Ranger's Station was impossible to find. Their decision to not staff the parking booths should not lead to an inconvenience for the campers.
Also, they say on their website that they are pet-friendly. When you get there you realize that pets are not allowed on the sand or in the water. Pets aren't usually that fond of asphalt.
Overall a very annoying experience. We won't be back.

Really visiting the beach only for the views of "Big Red" (the lighthouse) we were fortunate not to need to pay entrance fees for the state park. The beach is lovely (even with elevated lake levels) but it was quite cool. Perhaps that is why the fee booth was closed. We enjoyed the sunset on a clear cool evening. Got some great pictures. There is a huge parking area and concessions that are busier in summer and on warm days.

We only had time to stop here for about an hour or so on our day trip, but it was very enjoyable. The water was cold and it was quite windy, but my boys had fun playing in the sand and making sand castles. The sand was pretty soft, although in some areas there are a lot of little shell pieces which poke the feet. Litter didn't really seem to be a big problem here, which was nice. It wasn't too crowded and for the most part, people were social distancing. There's a nice walkway, a fishing pier, a play structure, ample parking, restrooms, and you can take photos of the lighthouse and watch the boats.

This beach is bar far one of the most beautiful in Michigan. Lake Michigan sunsets are unlike anything you've ever seen. Generally this place is pretty well kept. There's only been once where I've felt like there was a decent amount of litter but the next time we went it was clean. Bathroom's are ok but could use some love. Otherwise, it's a very fun place to swim and relax.

Took a day trip to this good sized popular beach. we noticed how busy it is getting near the beach parking and the best time to go would be as early as possible as the line up of cars waiting to get in, can be backed up for a good half hour on this day but once thru the ranger station, parking was no problem. there are a couple lots. the sand was hot on this day in the upper 80's so best to have footwear. there was more litter on the beach than I expected being a state run facility. maybe they don't groom the beach as much as they used to anymore but they know they have a valuable asset in this beach so it would be well worth it to keep visitors coming back by keeping it as clean as possible. there are plenty of grills, tables scattered near the channel and overall is a really nice park. the water is shallow for up to 40 yrds out before it drops off in the designated swim area. there is a large camp store with restrooms. good sights to see all around..one busy park this is.

Large, clean beach with lots of space and things to do. The main building houses restrooms, food/concession area, changing rooms, picnic tables, grills, kid’s play area & sand volleyball area. Fun for all ages!

Lots of parking. Deep beach, so still plenty of room for everyone with water level high. Beach had not been cleaned up for the season yet by state employees, probably due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Great place to watch boats coming in and out, and watching artist paint the lighthouse.

Are there locker rooms at the beach where I can lock up a backpack. I plan to Uber out and I want to lock up my phone and everything else so it doesn't get stolen or damaged

Honestly I’ve never seen dogs out when we visited but I’m sure it’s posted somewhere whether you can or can’t bring your fur baby.

What would be a good point to park bikes and bike to the Holland State park and venture on to tunnel park? Just a nice leisurely ride.

Hi, can you tell me what the walk is like from the parking lot to the beach? I am recovering from an ankle injury and saw a photo with a lot of stairs, not sure I am up for that at the moment! Thank you!

Paved from parking lot to great viewing spot not far away. Sidewalk may have sand blown from wind on any particular day.

There are so many beaches to choose from! Is this a good and safe beach for a family with a four year old? Thanks!

Yes, we've spent a lot of time here and it's always nice and clean. Can be a lot of people, so throw a nice bright hat on that 4 year old so they're easy to spot. Can't really go wrong all along the west coast of MI...but Holland certainly stands out.
Pentwater is another great spot if you're a little farther north.

What gps address do I need to get here and do I have to walk a long distance to the beach? Can I see the lighthouse from here? Will have only one hour to spend here and hope to see some good scenery as I’ve never been in this area before or seen the lake, beaches or lighthouses. Thanks for any suggestions.

Address for Holland State Park , 2215 Ottawa Beach Rd. Holland 49424. This might be the address of the office. The beach is at the end of Ottawa Beach Rd. Plenty of parking right on the beach, get there early on weekends. The Big Red Light House is across the channel from the State Park. Great view for pictures . Easy walk to the end of the North pier head.
