Fayette is a former industrial town on the Garden Peninsula. The state of Michigan has done a wonderful job of preserving this historical site. First, stop at the interpretive center. There you will see a scale model of Fayette's hayday..the residences, smelting shop, opera house, hotel, physician's office, a thriving community. Walk down the steep hill and view Snail Harbor, it... This place has so much to offer. A ghost town, hiking trails, visitors center with some seriously delicious ice cream, camping. My family and I have been going here for years. In my opinion, May is the best time to go because you'll see the Trilium in bloom and there are less visitors. Miles of walking trails take you back... More

Fayette was our first stop in the upper peninsula road trip. We arrived late in the day and we had the whole place to ourselves. This is what is left of a formerly bustling port on Lake Michigan. Many of the buildings are intact and have great historical explanations. It was so quiet and peaceful and worth the 30 minutes... More

I was leary of this. A few empty houses...no big whoop. But it was simply amazing. The location is so beautiful. And the structures are well preserved and the story is presented well. I learned a lot about the lives of the workers in the 1800s. More

Great place to visit, but be advised that it is about 16 miles south of US-2, and you won't find much else to do on the Garden Peninsula. Have your camera ready for this place. If you plan on camping, you might like to know that the campground is semi-modern, which means that there is no sanitation station for RV... More

Fayette is not on the way to anywhere but is worth the extra drive. It is a recreation of a town built to process iron ore in the mid-1800s and provides a living history experience of that time period. The State of Michigan has done an excellent job of restoration. More

This state park is really off the beaten track but it is well worth the trip. It is a ghost town, a town where there was once a thriving community making iron ingots from ore, limestone and charcoal. People lived and worked here for a number of years until the plant closed and then they moved on, leaving the buildings.... More
