This museum is great for families. It is interactive, it keeps children engaged and interested. For adults, the exhibits are very informative and interesting. For those that love great lakes history I think will enjoy this museum immensely. The entrance inside the museum is beautiful!

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum is located in an unassuming building on Belle Isle, an island park in the Detroit River. Renovated in 2013, the Dossin has modern exhibits on the history of the Detroit River and Great Lakes on the development of the Detroit area. Don't miss the SS William Clay Ford pilothouse, with great views of the Detroit... More

The kids loved this museum. We spent the afternoon there checking out all the different exhibits. The volunteers there were very helpful in answering questions and showing us around. Most things there were hands on which is good when you have little kids. There is even a pilothouse that was from a real freighter that you can go up in... More

The Edmund Fitzgerald exhibit is the highlight of this Museum. But the rest of the museum is well worth seeing. Come and learn more of what the Great Lakes are all about!

This maritime museum is located on Belle Isle, which is the main attraction. Museum has great potential and is located in a historic building on the island. Collection is limited.

My 9-yr-old and 12-yr-old grandsons love ships so they really enjoyed the museum which just re-opened. We were lucky enough to see 2 freighters pass by just as we arrived! Worth seeing if you like ships. Good for younger children, too.

In May of 2013, the Dossin Museum finished a five-month, $2 million renovation. The Belle Isle museum has added new exhibits, updated existing ones and modernized the maritime museum with new technology. It has been refreshed to focus on the Detroit area, rather than all of the Great Lakes. One of the major changes is the new permanent exhibit "Built... More

Its neat to learn about the great lakes, and the shipping history. The kids loved reading about all the ship wrecks, and playing in the old freighter pilot house.

On the edge of the River, this museum has some very good exhibits about shipping on the river and the Great Lakes. The wheel house from a steamer is always a favorite. A nice family Sunday outing.

Stumbled across this museum from a brochure and it turned out to be one of our favorites of the trip. It has free admission and great displays. Learned all about shipping on the Great Lakes, and even saw some large cargo ships sail by. Plenty about Belle Isle - one of the cooler urban islands I've ever seen - and... More
