While researching our trip to Detroit, the nearby Conservancy was mentioned several times but the Dossin Great Lakes Museum wasn't and that is a shame. While the museum is free, be aware that entrance onto Belle Isle requires a Recreation Passport fee of $9 for out of state vehicles or $11 for Michigan vehicles. This is imposed by the Michigan... We were pleasantly surprised how nice and interesting this museum was. The Director of the museum spent quite a bit of time with us explaining the highlights of the museum. Their displays are quite interesting- especially the wood paneled smoking room with a gorgeous stained glass window from the City of Detroit III. There is an interesting exhibit relating to... More

Stumbled upon this recently renovated museum while visiting Belle Isle. It's a nice little museum about Detroit’s maritime history. Among the exhibits it features the S.S. William Clay Ford pilot house and the beautiful Gothic room from the S.S. City of Detroit III, ships no longer in service. The staff was very friendly and took time to talk to us... More

This museum is great for families. It is interactive, it keeps children engaged and interested. For adults, the exhibits are very informative and interesting. For those that love great lakes history I think will enjoy this museum immensely. The entrance inside the museum is beautiful!

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum is located in an unassuming building on Belle Isle, an island park in the Detroit River. Renovated in 2013, the Dossin has modern exhibits on the history of the Detroit River and Great Lakes on the development of the Detroit area. Don't miss the SS William Clay Ford pilothouse, with great views of the Detroit... More

The kids loved this museum. We spent the afternoon there checking out all the different exhibits. The volunteers there were very helpful in answering questions and showing us around. Most things there were hands on which is good when you have little kids. There is even a pilothouse that was from a real freighter that you can go up in... More

The Edmund Fitzgerald exhibit is the highlight of this Museum. But the rest of the museum is well worth seeing. Come and learn more of what the Great Lakes are all about!

This maritime museum is located on Belle Isle, which is the main attraction. Museum has great potential and is located in a historic building on the island. Collection is limited.

My 9-yr-old and 12-yr-old grandsons love ships so they really enjoyed the museum which just re-opened. We were lucky enough to see 2 freighters pass by just as we arrived! Worth seeing if you like ships. Good for younger children, too.
