This is definitely an interesting place. Many of the historical fort structures are a bit run down but there is still a lot of beauty here. Not located in the greatest of areas but the grounds are completely safe and staffed with security guards. Hours are odd (sometimes it will be closed for no reason) and there is a parking... More

I enlisted in the U.S. Army and was inprocessed here on 23 July 1968. Performed work (details) around some of these buildings. So sad to read about and view the decline this fort has suffered. I truly wax nostalgic about this fort and the surrounding city. Many memories and experiences come back to me as I read Trip Advisor's article... More

It's sad to see the old Fort Wayne area in such disrepair. Buildings are literally falling down, roofs are caved in and weeds are growing everywhere. We had a nice tour via the Detroit Historical Museum and our guide was very knowledgable. Civil War Days are a bit chaotic. There's no real guide to what's happening and where. At this... More

As a history buff / film maker myself , the historic fort wayne is definitely a location to tour. Surrounded by a ton of history, this is as close to being in the boots of the 19th century soldiers in Detroit as you can get. Soldiers from the civil war all the way up to the Vietnam war were stationed... More

It's really a shame so few Michigan residents know about this place, especially those interested in military history. A complete walled fortress right here in our own back yard. And as a former tour guide from back in the 1980's let me tell ya', this place is haunted. When you wander around and get that feeling you're being watched, you... More

Loved it. Very cheap. Bring your own picnic basket. See the baddest fort that was once filled with 1000 cannons. Wa built during the Civil war times. They had a special day with reenactments. I'd advise going then. Look at my picture to see why. The awesome people (vets) who bravely fought for our country are there during these times... More

I recommended a visit duration of only 2-3hrs, because you might not immediately fall in love with this place...I visited three times over the years before it clicked for me. I mean, I always found it cool, but somehow, after maybe the third time or so, I absolutely fell in love with the place. So much so that I am... More

TRIP ADVISOR - I WANT TO UPLOAD PICS, BUT THE ICON DOES NOT WORK. The history of why this fort was built is fascinating. It was funded in 1839 to guard against a war in Canada among British subjects that was feared to spill across the river into the US. During the civil war (1863-1868) the earthen embankments were upgraded... More

Pity that more funds are not available to restore and maintain this place. Worth a visit if you are an absolute buff for old forts. Otherwise, stay at The Henry Ford.
