Firstly we dined at the Weathervane, one of many in the collection of MUSHROOM houses. This gives one the idea of the interior of these now private homes. The heavy stone and low ceilings take you back to a famous HOBBIT novel! It is amazing to see the neighborhood and how these structures hug the hills and incorporate modern needs... More

We stopped by the historical society first and got a map of these homes. There were 2 areas in the villiage to see them easily. We walked around one block and drove through the other area. Very interesting from an artistic or architectural view.

We took a bus tour through all the mushroom houses. The houses were amazing to see all the beautiful stone added to the houses stone walkways and stone fences. Then we went to The Castle for a fantastic lunch and a walk around the grounds.

Charlevoix Michigan is typical of a coastal tourist town with its attendant heavy summer vehicle and foot traffic. It is unique for its collection of Earl Young's stone houses including the "Mushroom House". These privately owned houses evoke the hobbit village in the movie "Lord of the Rings" and are extraordinarily appealing (at least to me!). Built of nearly local... More

Not only are the "Mushroom Houses" of Charlevoix Michigan simply amazing and jaw dropping but some are vacation rentals. We rented one for a week and loved it so much we are renting it again next year. The houses by Earl Young could also be called "Hobbit Houses" as they resemble fantasy homes. They are built from native rocks and... More

Pick up a map in Charlevoix and drive around and see the houses. They are unique! Takes just a few minutes but well worth the effort.

It's a fun little drive to ride around and look at these very cool little houses. You can pick up a map of the driving route and just follow the numbers. And then you can get out and take pictures of them. It doesn't cost a thing and it doesn't take long. Definitely worth a look!

We did our own walking tour and saw the mushroom houses. They are cute and interesting. It's a fun, free activity and it's only a short walk from the main drive.
