In its early years, the theater presented touring vaudeville acts and performers such as John Philip Sousa. It was transformed into a movie palace in 1930 and has been in continuous operation for over 100 years. Celebrated for its splendid acoustics, the theatre has played an important role in the life of the area. The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center was formed in December 2002 and launched its first six-month presenting season with a Centennial Celebration in May 2005. The theater has been newly restored, with great attention to historical detail, at a cost of over $9 million. The restoration was overseen by noted architect, Hugh Hardy, with engineering and construction by skilled Berkshire craftspeople and artisans. The theater is a recipient of support from Save America’s Treasures, the historical restoration has been certified by the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the National Park Service. In addition, The Mahaiwe is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places! The Mahaiwe is now a unique year-round performing arts center presenting music, dance, theater, opera, and classic films in the southern Berkshires. The theater seats almost 700 audience members. We have brought hundreds of live events as well as classic films, and the Metropolitan Opera “Live in HD” broadcasts to the theater’s stage and screen as well as hosted dozens of performances presented by others. The Mahaiwe strives to welcome the broadest possible community into our theater on an ongoing basis. « less

It was great. The theater has recently been renovated, all the seating gives a good view of the stage, and the offerings are excellent.

I always enjoy going to a show at the Mahaiwe. I don't think that there is a bad seat in the house, and the acoustics are great. They have many wonderful offerings for all tastes. Truly a gem.

Fantastic way to see live metropolitan opera performances, plus interviews with the stars Take a peek backstage, see the set changes, and costumes. Great seating, sound, and price. Sure beats the hassle of going into Manhattan, fighting traffic, crowds and paying high prices. This is a true joy!

Old world atmosphere, very well maintained. Great location. No space for refreshments available. Great spot for the film festival!

Attended a movie showing of War Horse and was impressed with this venue. Good sound, comfortable, not plush, seating...easy access...helpful staff...I never saw the theater before renovation, but it's a very pleasing to the eye building. Seeing a live music performance here in July and I'll have more to say after that...

This renovated theater seating about 700 people showcases a great variety of entertaiment is a wonderful space. The staff is always helpful and personable. I am lucky to have this only 10 minutes from home, but since this is a tourist area, many weekenders enjoy the theater as well.. something for everyone.

We are delighted with the wonderful renovation of the Mahaiwe, but are almost always disappointed with the lack of programming - any programming - on many weekends. A perfect example is the upcoming long weekend of January 18, 19, and 20th, 2014 (Martin Luther King weekend). According to the Mahaiwe's website, there is one event planned that entire weekend, a... It has been several years since the Mahaiwe theater had a huge renovation restoring some of the beautiful decor from a bygone era. The seats used to be uncomfortable but are now great and the theater is small enough that there are really no bad seats for viewing the stage. The quality of the acts has also improved with a... I rarely have time to reserve way ahead, which is something I recommend when The Mahaiwe has almost any well-known performer or Met Opera Series in High Definition. That said, I arrived at last minute and picked up a ticket to hear Natalie Merchant: what a treat, even though the A/C failed mid-show. The acoustics are excellent, seats OK, decor... More
