Billy Goat Trail is a series of trails along the Potomac River on the Maryland side in Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park. As the name suggests, you need to be part mountain goat to hike this trail! There are actually three Billy Goat Trails, but I've only done Section A. This section starts from the towpath at the... I've been hiking this trail for years. It's always a pleasant walk and I'm often surprised at how challenging the trail can be. The trail name is pretty accurate: a goat would easily be able to roam the rocks and crevices. Not so easy for humans. Because this is such a popular urban escape, there seems to be an assumption... There are multiple Billy Goat trails at Great Falls, but my favorite by far is Trail A! If you are up for an adventure, surefooted, and at least in decent physical shape, (you don't have to be insanely fit or anything, but keep in mind that it IS strenuous and can be VERY dangerous if you are not careful) than... My only issue with this trail is that by its cute name and lack of warning, many people try it without proper equipment or experience. Several people a year need to be rescued of this trail because it was more than they could handle

Hard to believe that this much "nature" is within a bike ride. easy car drive or long hike out of the City. An incredible natural resource we should all enjoy and preserve

My family loves the Billy Goat Trail. My teenage children like Trail A which is the most challenging. I enjoy them all and the views are breathtaking. You feel like you are on a vacation when it is only 15 minutes or so from home. Great hiking and a great place to walk dogs.

My husband took me here on one of our first dates, so I can definitely say it's good for couples! You'll have lots of opportunities to hold hands and steady yourselves! Every time I do this trail, I think of great memories and enjoy the changing seasonal scenery.

This is a bit of history. This trail follows the Maryland side of the Potomac River, along Great Falls, just north of Georgetown, in DC. The trail is in Maryland, but part of the C&O canal National Park, which runs from Georgetown in DC north west to Cumberland, MD. The trail is rough, not for the fashionable. Wear good hiking... Lovely walk along the canal, or biking if you prefer. Only down side is the parking is tough on a beautiful day.

We hike this at least twice a month during the year. It is nice to see the colors and wildlife change though the various seasons. Often we take our kids who love it. They cannot do all of Billy Goat A so we usually leave 2/3s of the way through via the emergency exit. It's just enough for our 4... More
