My wife and I were invited by friends to take the boat ride over to Smith Island. Realize when you board the boat to make the trip out to Smith Island that you will not be going to a glitzy tourist attraction, that Smith Island still is a working community even today. When one arrives at the island (at Ewell... More

I read pretty decent reviews about going to Smith Island for a day trip so my husband and I decided to go for it. I put in “Smith Island Ferry” into the GPS and it lead us straight there. I thought I had done as much research as I could, but boy was I wrong. We had no trouble finding... More

Traveling by ferry to Smith Island, you are taken back in time. The principal industries--fishing, crabbing and oystering--are plied by inhabitants whose ancestors founded the islands. A great day trip.

A quiet fishing village. A very different life style. Home to the "Smith Island Cake"', a ten layer cake. Very nice boat ride to the island. You can get a slice or a whole cake on the island. You can rent a golf cart and explore on your own.

I was worried. What are we going to do for 3 days on an island without wi-fi, cell phone service or even a bar? Turned out to be a wonderful retreat -- the locals are friendly and helpful, and the general store/deli is a great place to meet people. The island is the last inhabited island in Maryland - great... We just returned from a couple nights in Smith Island and it was a wonderful experience. I've seen some negative reviews so let me clarify the experience. This is NOT a resort. This is one of the last small working island communities in the Chesapeake Bay. As they advertise, there are no stores, bars, entertainment, beaches, or attractions. You have... More

We caught a small boat out of Crisfield ($25.00 round trip per person) at 12:30 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon. Easy, free parking with picnic tables by the dock. No restrooms there, but a short walk up the street is the local Visitors' Center which has public facilities. The 45 minute boat ride was wonderful. Seven passengers sat on plastic... More

Awesome day trip to a little island in the middle of the chesapeake. You can dine at the local restaurant, The Bayside Inn, and rent a golf cart or bike and explore the island. Good for all ages.

We made a last minute decision to spend a weekend in the southern tip of maryland with our two kids (8 and 10). We found our first day, at Point Lookout, somewhat disappointing so we decided to spend the second visiting Smith Island. Then we almost changed our mind, given some of the extremely negative reviews. But in the end... More

Loved the water views and all the different species of waterfowl. Museum was small but informative. But we weren't expecting much and it is nice to see how others live which is a big part of traveling. But would have probably rented bikes instead of golf cart since it was totally flat and so small it would not have been... More
