Thriving Maine art

We had a wondereful experience here meeting up and coming artists, and well worth the afternoon we spent at a wine and cheese presentation

CMCA is in a temporary location right now (the 162 Russell address is the former address, which is for sale and vacant now), but once we found it we enjoyed the current group show, "Floating." The center also has an interesting gift shop with items made by local artists.

My family and I have been here a couple of times. A great educational day. Well kept and interesting. It was a pleasant surprise to have such a gem of place in downeast Maine. Enjoy yourself and slow down. Look at the art.

The gallery is in the process of moving to Rockland, just down the coast, so if you try to find it in Rockport village you will be disappointed. The building is for sale.

One would not expect "contemporary art" to be much produced or on display in Maine, because the state is mostly known for iconic representational and regionalist art. And so this Center is an unexpected and welcome jewel to the mid-coast Maine art scene. It is small, but excellent. Mostly known to showcase Maine contemporary artists, with periodic special exhibitions. The... More

The exhibits we have seen here are always interesting and thought provoking, This is not common Maine art but if you like contemporary do not miss it. They are building a big new museum in Rockland - we will be sad to see this historic building abandoned.

Top notch body of faculty, great and diverse courses for the beginner to the most advanced, savvy professional. Great accommodations, excellent food, incomparable atmosphere of camaraderie. This is the place where you will learn about photography and much more

Visit the Maine Center of Contemporary Art to start. Then visit visit the Rockland/Farnsworth Museum....and top it off with a visit to Colby College. Colby has one of the outstanding art museums in the country.....an hour and a half away.....it is well worth the visit.

We always include the Center in every visit to the area and usually that means three or four visits a year. We usually prefer it to the more famous Farnsworth in neighboring Rockland. Occasionally the Center's exhibitions prove to be a dud (what museum or gallery doesn't have a few duds?), but when it is good it is provocative, mind-stretching,... More
