At Fort Knox you'll have the opportunity to get great photo's against the back drop of many different areas. Bring a flashlight to explore the many different passages and open up your imagination to help bring this history alive. They offer free tours but we choose to do a self walk so our 4yr old son could explore the many... More

A fort that never fired a shot in anger, Fort Knox (yes, that Knox, but no gold here) is inexpensive and a good picnic/restroom stop just off Route 1 in midcoast Maine. Fun for about an hour, and kids love the spooky inner corridors. Visitor center is basic; views of Bucksport and Penobscot River are lovely. Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory... More

Though this fort so no real action, it is still really cool and educational. Lots of fun to walk around and beautiful views. It's also haunted. The East Coast Ghost Trackers do tours here each summer. Check one out! More

This is an excellent place to take a family day trip. Exploring the fort, inside and out, is not only educational but physically fun for all ages. Bring a picnic and enjoy lunch at the fort. I grew up going to Fort Knox as a kid. I took my own children and now take my grandchildren. It's a wonderful place! More

Use the guide provided to get the most out of a tour of the fort. On a beautiful day, it's worthwhile to tour the fort, exploring the various areas and enjoying the views of the bridge, the river, and the quaintly beautiful town of Bucksport across the river. Plan an hour minimum for the bridge observatory and fort -- up... More

This area of Maine between Castine and the then thriving lumber/shipbuilding city of Bangor was invaded and occupied by the British during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Despite the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, Fort Knox was begun in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River valley against a possible repeat of history, that is to say yet another... More

We went to see the observation tower at the "bucksport" bridge (which had beautiful views of the islands mainland and ocean) and were pleasantly surprised by Ft Knox. This structure is in excellent condition and we spent a couple of hours exploring the grounds. More
