The mailrun boat is a great tour and you get a sense of the island life. Great value as well
Bring your lunch and venture off the beaten path to one of the island beaches. Cliff I. or Long I. are spectacular and the views out toward the Atlantic are wonderful. Be sure to pack a jacket for the return if after 5PM.
You can take a short ferry ride to Peaks Island and get a nice view of the harbor. If you have time, you can get off at Peaks Island and stroll and catch the next ferry. We didn't do this, so I don't know how interesting it might be.
Get on a ferry to get to one of the islands or just to get a tour of the bay. Beware of extremely pricey parking in Portland, especially during high season.
Slip away from modern civilization in as little as 10 minutes with a visit to the Calendar Islands of Casco Bay. It is amazing how different it feels - leaving the everyday shackles of the mainland behind. It is no wonder that so many folks are bitten by the island living bug. It is addicting once you have tried it.
What's better then exploring an old World War I Battery? It was definitely worth while visiting Peaks because it's accesible by just walking and offers stores and restaurants for visiters
