Honestly, it's touristy, crowded, with limited parking and it has none of the ambiance or quaintness of say Portsmouth, NH or Boothbay. There are also a LOT of homeless people EVERYWHERE.

This is a touristy spot. There are a lot of nice stores and restaurants around here! The smell can be fishy, but you are in Portland after-all! I always like to stay at a hotel near here since everything is within easy access!

We arrived in Portland at night and were concerned about dining, but Portland was very active. We ate at J Oyster Co.and had great Lobster stew. In the morning we walked around Portland and headed home.

The local ferry and the cruise ships disembark right onto Commercial. There's lots to do, but there's a lot of foot traffic and parking can be dicey (but not impossible).

from the walks down the piers, the fish markets, store fronts etc....you'll see something you'll like. Plenty of eateries, shops and "colorful "street characters to amuse you. You are in the fishery district so yes- it does smell in places. The parking meters are 2 hours2 dollar max, but there is paid parking for $5-10 all day. well worth it.... More

Great area, Has a smell of fish though. I liked the cobblestone roads and all the shops they were all uniques and interesting to browse. The streets were all up and down not good I guess if you had a stroller or wheel chair. It felt like a very cozy warm village with all kinds of food as well. Parking... More

Pros: lots of great people-watching and harbor-watching, lots of shops and restaurants - we ate and found the exact souvenir we wanted. Cons: street parking can be tricky, and the local garages are insanely expensive.

Haven't been to Portland in a long time. The Commercial St area has really become a nice place to spend some time. Many many restaurants and shops to visit. lot of cobblestone streets which are nice but hard to walk on or use strollers (saw people struggling with theirs).

Park the car and don't skip Commercial Street. Waterfront. Great restaurant choices and great shopping, it's a nice, scenic walk.

Commercial street is just another street for tourists. If you enjoy busy mediocre restaurants and people selling cheap jewelry, this is the place for you. The city has much more to offer than this.
