Gritty McDuff’s, Maine’s Original Brew Pub specializes in

hand-crafted English style ales and traditional and creative pub fare, in

a friendly and fun atmosphere. Both Gritty's fine ales and the pubs

have won countless "best of" awards through our twenty-six years of operation.

Our standard brews are session beers, Gritty’s Pub-Style Pale Ale, McDuff’s Best Bitter, Black Fly Stout,

allowing one to have multiple beers within a reasonable time period without overwhelming the

senses. Our seasonal and varietal ale offerings are more adventurous, some with a higher ABV, and some with higher IBU. We brew a beer for all craft brew palates.

For the diner, we offer traditional pub fare alongside not so traditional

specialty items. Our pub-style long tables with benches easily accommodate parties

of all sizes and add to the camaraderie.

Gritty's, in the very center of the Old Port, is Portland's original brewpub. Very good, fresh beer with six or seven on tap. Try the seasonal ale, but I'm a fan of their Best Brown and Black Fly Stout. If you're a regular, or plan to be a regular, apply to join the Mug Club. It's costs $75 but you'll... More

This is a fun place to gather with friends. Good brew, good food and good music. Our favorite was the Farmhouse Project! They really rocked the place!! You won't be disappointed if you're in the mood for some pub food and fun with friends!

We stopped here while in Portland for a quick bite with friends. I had a club sandwich which was very good. Portions were good size. Atmosphere was typical for a pub. Great selection of beers. Service was ok. Attentive at first but after we received our food, we didn't see waitress for quite awhile.

The food and drinks are solid, with good occasional music. Beer's great. Issue is the place turns into college central in the evenings. Gets pretty noisy/crowded.

We're pleased to learn you enjoyed our food and drink offerings. The interesting part of our traditional pub is how it transforms throughout the day. We enjoy this aspect of it as it permits something for all tastes. Weekend evenings definitely become popular with the younger crowd, just as might be expected. We hope to see you back again. Cheers! I visited here for lunch as my tour coach stopped in Portland we used this as both a rest stop and lunch stop. After wandering the shops I just stopped in to Gritty McDuff's. I decided to try the Poutine dish which consisted if fries with melted cheese & bacon over them served with gravy on top. Definitely different but... More

With an abundance of choices in Portland, we are thankful you choose to try our pub on your brief visit to our city. Our poutine is a local favorite so we're pleased to learn you tried it along with one of our beers. We hope you'll stop and see us again if you should find yourself in Portland. Cheers! More

Great, friendly service, good pub food in Gritty's roadhouse pub on US1 just south of Freeport. Nice to have outdoor seating available. Well crafted beer and a nice selection. Cascade hops overused in my opinion, though, would have preferred more variety, some of the more aromatic choices in some of the brews.

First of all, thank you for the review. To avoid any confusion for people reading these reviews, although this posting is under the Portland location, this visit occurred at our Freeport location. Each Gritty's location setting is different. The Freeport location offers outdoor seating and a big play yard which often permits parents to enjoy a meal while their kids... More

Long tables are good for friends sharing beer. The pub food is good. Better craft beer in other Portland bars.

Thank you for the shout out regarding our communal tables and food. Many a memory has been forged over the environment which allows for easy conversations with old friends and the ability to meet new ones. Like many things, beer preferences vary with each person. While we are disappointed to learn that our offerings weren't your favorite, we appreciate that... More

Pleased to hear that you gave us a try on your visit to Portland, and that you enjoyed our beer. Craft beers are traditionally kept a little warmer than domestics so I'm assuming this was the case with your pour. (Although we do understand that everyone also has personal preferences which might also be the case.) Thank you for the... More

When we are in the old port with friends, this is always one of our stops when bar hopping. Have eaten here once in the many times visited and food was good and affordable.
