We visited here on a beautiful day and enjoyed poking around the walls and batteries, with views up and down the Kennebec river into the Penobscot Bay. Then we walked the beach for over 3 miles, as tide was moving out, and we walked all the way around the point and down the entire beach area of the PB State... More

If one is going to visit Fort Popham they also need to take Fort Baldwin Road and a short hike to Fort Baldwin. Both worked together in World War I. They are both 100+ years old and show it, but that allows you to imagine what it was like in your own way.

Very interesting and historical, but neither fort (Fort Baldwin is up the road and then a small hike through the woods) is safe for young children. Please hold on to them tightly. There are no signs warning of danger, not rails on the crumbling staircases, no rails or guards by very steep drop offs. We were there in August, at... More

I wouldn't go out of my way just for this but in combination with a meal at Spinney's and then going to the beach it's great. I wouldn't block more than an hour for this. The kids had fun climbing up the steps and looking out all of the windows. There are some great spots for family or kiddie pics... More

About a mile or so from Popham Beach State Park. Allow half an hour to walk around. No displays, but there are signs describing the use, architecture, and how to shoot a cannon.

this fort was very cool, it is huge 2 stories got lots of plaques telling the history, parking is very limited at the fort, if you are on a motorcycle you can squeeze in.

Instead of taking the road directly to the fort/Popham beach....consider taking the Morse Mountain trail instead. This is the best kept secret in this area. Park in a small lot (no charge) and hike 2 easy miles to the beach. The beach is very close to Popham-you can see it/walk to it. But, there is almost no one there. You... More

It was FREE, parking, beautiful beach adjacent. A wonderful alternative to the crowds at Popham State Park. Bring your fishing rods, beach chairs, kites...pack a lunch.

This fort is fun to visit. You can walk around the fort and climb the tower. There is not much else to do although there is a beach within the same area.

Both Popham State Park and the adjacent sites at the early Popham settlement and Fort Baldwin are well worth your time. Fort Popham is well preserved and you can walk around the gun battery foundations at Fort Baldwin, though neither has much in the way of informational signage. There's a brief history of the Popham settlement, but no artifacts on... More
