Fort Popham is a nice, old, civil war fort that protected the mouth of the Kennebec River, and the cities of Bath (historic City of Ships) and that State Capitol of Augusta. The fort is an impressive relic of the past and it's free to the public. Great place for a picnic on the parade grounds or right around the... More

Interesting for a half hour visit if you are going to Popham Beach. Nice views of the mouth of the Kennebec River and interesting history. Although we didn't eat there we heard that Spinney's is good for real Maine seafood and Percy's Store is good for supplies, lunches and breakfasts.

What an amazing place for some kids to explore, just as exciting for adults who appreciate architecture. We spent a 1/2 hour here and the teen girls loved it. It was an overcast & foggy day - maybe even better because of it, as it made it mysterious. Don't forget bug spray.

What the kids loved about this place was that you could run around, climb the stairs and basically check out the whole thing.

As noted, an old historic fort site that was never completed, but still retains a wonderful amount of structure that you can investigate. Parking at the site is VERY limited, so know this before you go. It is free to visit and you spend about an hour here. Make sure to visit the nearby beach area on a nice day.... More

This is a very old and historic fort. It was pretty weird going into all the chambers but it is amazing how well built this fort is.

We visited here on a beautiful day and enjoyed poking around the walls and batteries, with views up and down the Kennebec river into the Penobscot Bay. Then we walked the beach for over 3 miles, as tide was moving out, and we walked all the way around the point and down the entire beach area of the PB State... More

If one is going to visit Fort Popham they also need to take Fort Baldwin Road and a short hike to Fort Baldwin. Both worked together in World War I. They are both 100+ years old and show it, but that allows you to imagine what it was like in your own way.

Very interesting and historical, but neither fort (Fort Baldwin is up the road and then a small hike through the woods) is safe for young children. Please hold on to them tightly. There are no signs warning of danger, not rails on the crumbling staircases, no rails or guards by very steep drop offs. We were there in August, at... More
