This retreat built for Civil War veterans is pretty amazing. It combines both the past and the present in a beautiful waterfront setting. The exhibits are informative and the setting can't be beat. The porch is beautiful with views of nearby Ram Island with its lighthouse and Cushing Island. There's also a small, peaceful garden at its base where you... More

Although the museum was closed, board member Dick Maguire very generously agreed to open it for us and give us a tour. The building is beautiful and the views spectacular. Dick was very knowledgeable and his enthusiasm was contagious. In addition to the very interesting Civil War materials on the first floor, don't forget to check out the Peaks Island... More

This Museum and Community Center serves locals and visitors very well. It combines memories of the Fifth Maine Regiment from the US Civil War with views of Coney Island of Maine in the 1890s and Peaks Island's role in World War II.

The 5th Maine Museum offers an inside view of the retreat offered to soldiers of the 5th Mine Regiment & their families after the Civil War. It commanders a spectacular view of Casco Bay from Peaks Island, just across the bay from Portland, Maine. It contains many pieces of Civil War memorabilia from the Union as well as Confederate armies.... More

The place was closed, but the caretaker let us in to take a peak (!) Gorgeous room and nicely presented artifacts. Great view off the back. I'd like to visit again when it was really opened.

I wish I had spent more time, but an afternoon rain came up, and we had to catch the ferry. This seemed like one of those places which seem simple, but can stand up to some digging around. I would have loved to check out the personal accounts in the library. Obviously well-cared for in a beautiful location, it is... More

Don't expect your visit to be only exhibits relating to the 5th Maine during the Civil War. The museum also tells the story about Peaks Island during WWII. Much to learn and see. If you can peg down the Curator you'll learn every detail. She is a born and bred Peaks Islander.

While on our walk around the island with some friends we visited the 5th to show them the civil war memorabilia they have on display. The woman running the museum then brought us upstairs and we told us a detailed history of the island. You wouldn't think a small unassuming island would have such such a fascinating history, but between... More
