I give it two stars only for the oddity of it. I saw this a long time ago (23 yrs.) as a teen. Our family was pretty disapointed in the cheesy tour given. For all the beauty and interest Maine has to offer the Desert of Maine is not one I will recommend even today. Enjoy the beauty of Maine... more

I loved our stop here. I was expecting hokey and lame, but the contents of the barn were interesting, our tour guide (Jack?) was really nice & knowledgeable. The walking trails around the area look pleasant. The silt is SO DEEP. At one point I was a little concerned about my son walking of the edge, but the silt is... more

I guess my friend and I are weird oldtimers at this point, and my interest in geology got the better of me, because we found this place very interesting. Contrary to a previous review, it isn't that "nothing grows in a...bald spot" which makes it sound just like a barren backyard.. It's actually the sediment at the bottom of a... more

We went to the Desert of Maine today and I'm not quite sure what to say about it. It was kitschy and the gift shop and signs looked like they hadn't changed since the 1950's (or perhaps earlier). According to the tour guide, the desert had been much bigger years ago and perhaps it was interesting to see back then.... more

The campground adjacent to the Desert of Maine - the Desert Dunes of Maine Campgound - was wonderful. We had never been to a campground before and the owners/workers were very nice, even bringing firewood to our camping circle. The showers were hot and only cost $1. You received free admission to the desert with your campground fees, so we... more

It was OK. We took our two young kids (2.5 and 4.5) there. It had rained a lot the day before, so the sand was very packed and hard. It was still pouring when we got there, so we had to take the Jeep-carriage and did not have a chance to walk in the sand. The guide was fine, but... more

A long time ago, some ignorant farmer didn't realize he needed to rotate the crops on his farm. Now the soil has no nutrients, and therefore nothing grows in a 4 acre bald spot. Duuuuh!!!! Don't bother. more

Where shall I start...This place is cool (or shall I say Hot). You will experience so many natural wonders here. The "golf cart" tour through the desert is worth the trip alone. The guide lets you get out along the way, to explore buildings and trees that are almost completely engulfed by the dunes...Yes dunes!!! Yes Maine!!! The nice people... more

It is a beauitful place to see you will learn alot of history and you will never forget this place as long as you live. They also have rooms there so you can stay over night. I know that because last year I took my family there and walked around in the sand bare foot. There is buses that will... more
