So nice. Just drive, as long as you can. Sights are beautiful. Worth it. Properties are breathtaking and make you dream.
We were a little disappointed with the Highway 1 drive. We were expecting a water view drive. We didn't go much more than 50 or so miles north of Freeport. There just wasn't that much water view. This is not to say that it wasn't a picturesque drive, the scenery is pretty, lots of hardwood trees with beautiful leaf color.... More
Be sure and drive up Hwy 1 to Wiscasset, about 45 minutes north and get a lobster roll from Red's Eats. It is right before the bridge on left side. Don't be afraid of the shack. It has the best lobster rolls I have ever tasted. Price is around $17 for the roll, but very worth every bite.
We flew into Boston, rented a car and took the entire day to ride up the coast to Freeport on Hwy 1 and 1a. We recommend stopping at Hampton Beach, York Village, Ogunquit, and Whole Foods in Portland. The ocean views, quaint villages, large New England style homes along the coast make this day long drive worth taking your time.
Simply beautiful-- landscape, ocean, cute towns, fun shops, choice of restaurants... if you get the chance, drive Route 1 in Maine. You will not regret it!
The drive up the Maine Coastline was awesome, breathtaking. Would love to return to same area again. Houses are so pretty, ocean alongside the highway. Many "WOW" moments on this drive. Also delicious ice cream!!!!!
US route 1 follows the coastline (not the waterline) from Kittery to Calais. Very few would be interested in driving the entire route compared to using I-95 which is close to Rt 1 in many areas. So, I suggest you stop at the Information Center in Southern Maine and plan how much time you want to drive through small towns... More
If you are not staying along Route 1...don't bother with this road. My wife and I were heading up to Acadia from Boston and totally fell for the "coastal" name. This is NOT a coastal highway. Sure...you see the coast every once in a while...but that does not make it coastal. Its just a road...with a few ocean views...and a... More
Coastal Highway US 1 is about 338 miles (544 km) from Kittery to Calais. I’ve driven it in all seasons. It’s Maine’s prime route for getting near but not on the coastline; if it were to hug it, it’d be 4 or more times as long. It’s as much a local road as a tourism corridor or a national highway.... We were excited to take coastal hwy 1 from Kennebunkport all the way to Bar Harbor Maine. I read the reviews of how long it can take but still wanted to do this drive. However, we quickly learned the east coast doesn't compare to the west coast views. The seaside towns offer the same views and touristy shops. We were... More
