They do not call the Main the Vacation State without reason. US 1 is very crowded, and slow moving. But you are on Vacation. Stop in Booth Bay Harbor. Park in the church parking lot, and visit the lobster boats. The town gets very crowded. We were there about 20 years ago, but for Main that is like yesterday. We... More

Great drive during the week! Not a lot of traffic and great sights to see. Started in Freeport and went to the Maritime Museum in Bath, awesome lobster roll and Scallops at Red Eats in Wisscasset, Maine Prison Shop at Thomaston (a must see!), Rockland (lighthouse museum and Wyeth museum), grabbed a drink and lunch in Camden Waterfront restaurant overlooking... If youre going... or driving Florida south to north, A1A should be considered. Of course it takes a little bit more time, but compared to the 12-lanes machine 95, the thin traffic through sleepy coastal vilages is a very pleasant ride... The fresh breeze from the Atlantic, that one also can see over the sanddunes here and there from the... More

We traveled up Route 1 from the New Hampshire Border to Rockland ME. We took in at least eight lighthouses and was inspired by the awesome coast, the great towns, Old Port in Portland ME. Take Route 1 then take the side roads, it does not matter if you know where you are going, you will not be disappointed.

We traveled this route on the way home from Portland, Maine. It took longer but it was well worth it if you have the time.

We were a little disappointed with the Highway 1 drive. We were expecting a water view drive. We didn't go much more than 50 or so miles north of Freeport. There just wasn't that much water view. This is not to say that it wasn't a picturesque drive, the scenery is pretty, lots of hardwood trees with beautiful leaf color.... More

Be sure and drive up Hwy 1 to Wiscasset, about 45 minutes north and get a lobster roll from Red's Eats. It is right before the bridge on left side. Don't be afraid of the shack. It has the best lobster rolls I have ever tasted. Price is around $17 for the roll, but very worth every bite.

We flew into Boston, rented a car and took the entire day to ride up the coast to Freeport on Hwy 1 and 1a. We recommend stopping at Hampton Beach, York Village, Ogunquit, and Whole Foods in Portland. The ocean views, quaint villages, large New England style homes along the coast make this day long drive worth taking your time.
