We meandered along the coast from Boston toward Bar Harbor, and enjoyed the back roads and small towns along the way. You've seen one Interstate, you've pretty much seen them all. But small, quaint communities-- god love them! I knew that we would love LL Bean; knew that we would enjoy the coastline. But the homeliness, warmth, and plain old... More

I so eagerly awaited this drive, and specially over peak fall weekend, Oct. 17. It did not disappoint. I recall route 1 on the pacific, and this was equally charming, although not all of it by the water. My impala cruised out of Portland airport onto 295 to Freeport. Then onwards it was route 1 all the way, passing Brunswick,... More

There is so much to see. You could easily spend several hours there. They are open 24 hrs. They sell everything you can think of. The prices are a little high, but the quality and warranty is second to none. Be sure to go to the outlets across the street they have a discount store over there where you can... More

You need an extra pair of eyes to see all the beautiful sights the coastal road has to offer. I just love, love, loved the Big Sur! It was such a shame I only had 1 day to get through this part of the trip. At every corner you want to stop to take everything in and to admire the... More

A nice break for the major turnpike. Very interesting local scenery. Calm streets with little stress. A great way to access the local attractions while avoiding the stressors of the interstate

Years ago, Freeport was essentially LLBean, it was a novelty to us as it was open 24 hours & back than that was unheard of. Now of course many stores have those hours. And Freeport has changed as well now it's a shopping mecca. Outlets all over the place, are there bargains to be had? Perhaps, depends on what you... More

This is a lovely road trip and well worth the drive. from Portland Me to Bar Harbor. Lots of places to stop and enjoy. Freeport Me is a great stop @ LL Bean outlets. Booth Bay another great side trip. A lovely seaside touristy town. Be sure to park in designated parking lots and make sure you put enough money... More

The colors were beautiful and unfortunately they were somewhat dimmed because of the rain, fog and cloudy sky. We stopped at the town of Camden, walked the harbor and found a bakery for tea and scones. Belfast, Bath and a couple of other towns also looked like great places to stop and walk - when it isn't raining. Glad we... More

Different parts of US Rt 1 in Maine can be very nice. It gets better the further north you go AND it's best when you get off Rt 1 and meander down by the water and small towns. US Rt 1 in Freeport is about shopping primarily. It does provide a good view of the different outlets and LL Bean.... More

While Rte 1 in the Freeport area is OK, it only provides a few glimpses of the ocean, and otherwise is not particularly interesting (other than possibly the businesses you pass). HIghlights include downtown Freeport, as well as some of the restaurants and businesses south of town. To explore the coastline, go to South Freeport or Lower Mast Landing Road.
