Nice route!

Wanted to see the New England coast and was not disappointed. Still made good time but was still able to see a lot of the coast with short ventures off the highway.

This is what you came to Maine for. Slow down and enjoy. Lots of great scenic views. Lots of little shops to check out, if you're so inclined.

Drove down U.S.1 to take a break from the traffic. Lots of interesting shops and restaurants along the way.

Get off the freeway and divert a few short miles to the coastal route. Beside saving the inane tolls every 200 yards, you will be embraced by the most delightful and nostalgic little towns. Must see the giant chocolate moose, the lighthouses, and even the presidential estate in Kennybunkport. Even Portland is impressive.

If you travel the length of this route through Maine you will experience many once-in-a-lifetime experiences. From the rugged coastline of Maine, to LL Bean's flagship store in Freeport, to picture postcard fishing villages, to lobster festivals, to blueberry fields in Central Maine, and acres and acres of potatoes in Northern Maine. If you're lucky you might even catch harvest.... More

If you are travelling between Freeport and Kittery you should really take the extra time to drive the coastal route on one of those trips. Beautiful homes, great coastal scenery, historical sights, and some lighthouses to explore. There is so much to see that you can't appreciate from the I95. Well worth a trip. There's more to a great trip... More

There is a lot to see here. Lots of little towns, clam shacks, and fishing piers that have generally been kept up pretty well.

The great American Road Trip starts here! Extending from the Canadian border, passing through the Downeast, Midcoast, Greater Portland, and Beaches areas of Maine, US-1 provides the North-South version or "Route 66". With spectacular coastal vistas, small-town Americana, primeval forests and loads of charm, there is a little bit of everything along the Maine coastal highway. You can stop at... More

You can't be in a hurry to take this route (that's what the Interstate is for), but the views, the little towns, the lobster shacks all make it worth it. Different from the West Coast's Highway 1, but still a treat.
