The mosses on the hike were amazing. An easy 1 mile hike to a bar island. Hiked all around small island with picturesque views all around. Need to keep track of tide schedule to make it back to Deer Island without getting your feet wet. Worth the trip to get there.

Only car in the lot, nice mile or so walk to the water, then at low tide enjoying the sand between the land and island, along with the birds and quite/serenity. Walk only challenging because of the abundance (like every two feet or so) of tree roots that will trip you up if not careful. But, great walk; beautiful scenery.

One of the most enchanting walks and coastal settings I've seen in Maine. After the walk, try the adjacent Cockatoo Portugese Restaurant along the shore within sight of Barred Island. Only issue is limited parking at the trailhead. You might need to park down the road a bit on a busy day.

The mile or so walk to Barred Island is through a lush forest carpeted with moss and ferns. We hiked through in the early evening which happened to be the time of low tide. The angle of the sun through the trees and undergrowth added a golden glow which was magical. Speaking of magical, we found a few fairy houses... More

Easy, beautiful.....go mid day. Lovely views and nice granite. It's free and should not be missed! You will be glad you did not skip it.

It is located at the end of a nature trail and is well worth the hike. Make sure you take the walk during low tide so you cand cross the sandbar onto Barred Island.

The walk through the mossy woods alone is worth the trip. Add the great views at the end, the tied island, the rocky shore and sandy beach- what more could a hike give you? Time your visit for low tide to get out on the island. Wear appropriate footwear- most of the trail is laced with tree roots. I saw... More

"Fog forest" ecology moderate walk for a mile from the parking lot (ONLY 8 cars). Boulders draped with lichen, sphagnum moss, etc. No sun until the bar. Good signage for plant, animal, bird info if you load a .pdf from Deer Isle Chamber of Commerce website ahead of time onto your e-reader, phone, etc (no Wifi or cell coverage available).... More

Like all hikes in the area, there are roots and rocks, but the hikes are so worth it! Hike at low tide so you can walk across the sand bar to Barred Island and climb around the rocks.

My family loved this hike. We found out about it from Tripadvisor and would have had a difficult time finding it if we hadn't checked here. The sounds of the Wood Thrush made this magical place even more magical. I was sure we'd run into a gnome or fairy on our way to the island but we ran into a... More
