Nervous Nellie's is a cottage industry (jams and chutneys made with mostly Maine fruit) in a cottage. It's a sculpture studio and acres of whimsical sculptures and installations of American icons like the general store, the juke joint, a western town complete with saloon, sheriff, jail, Chinese laundry, fortune teller, all made in Peter Beerits's quirky style, using re-purposed "junk" from the island dump and countless old barns. Try free jam samples in the shop or have a homemade scone with jam in the tea room. Something for everyone here!

The art work is distinctive and entertaining, The jams and jellies are just the topping on the cake. It is not east to get around if you have difficulty walking. Many of the pieces are in the woods, though it a short walk. The children ask about it as soon as they hear we are going to the Island.

While staying in Blue Hill, we decided to visit Deer Isle. Our hostess told us not to miss Nervous Nellie's. She was right. Be sure to bring your camera. What creative folks.

Give yourself time to tour the little 'town' the artist has created around the grounds. Unique art that is fun for kids and adults alike. I stopped by mostly to pick up some homemade jam and Maine honey, but was pleasantly surprised that there were so many interesting things to see. Check out the pottery inside the store.

Nellie's is located on a beautiful island connected by bridge to the Blue Hill peninsula. It is worth the drive to enjoy the delicious jams/jellies and the bizarre metal sculptures posed in wild situations throughout the adjacent woods. It's hard to explain, but great to see in person. We loved the jams so much that we purchased a few during... More

Extraordinary display of scultures, staged in a mini-village as well as in the nearby woods. Extraordinary couple that made us feel most welcome.

This is a neat place, highly recommend a stop especially with kids. Fun to wander through the old "town", visit the saloon, jailhouse and other buildings, then walk through a path in the woods into the castle and sit at the table with the knights. Bought some tasty hot pepper jelly but sadly the restaurant was closed that day.

Glad you enjoyed your visit, though I'm a little confused about the part about the restaurant being "closed that day". We have a seasonal tea room (not a full-service restaurant) and it is open every day from 9-5, just like the rest of the place. I confess that we do start putting things to bed as 5 PM approaches. I... More

The scrap metal sculptures are amazing which he does and the jams and jellies are very tasty and who can resist the name. We had coffee and raspberry scones. It doesn't get better than this.
