This gem of a museum, situated on the edge of Bowdoin College's classic quadrangle (itself a great place to stroll) is remarkable, not only for its diverse, superb collections, but also as an example of how to revamp an historically important museum building while respecting -- not desecrating -- the stately original 1894 building by McKim (of McKim, Mead and... A wonderful collection of art, artifacts, and eclectic items. Can spend well over an hour here perusing both contemporary and ancient art, Changing displays is great for repeat visits. Nice location on grounds of Bowdoin campus. Visit Arctic museum nearby while here.

Cute little art museum has an eclectic collection of ancient, classical and contemporary art. There are artifacts from ancient Rome and Greece, Assyria, and even Palmyria - now destroyed by Da'esh (ISIL/ISIS). It is, in fact, the largest curated collection north of Boston. If you are spending the day at Bowdoin and Brunswick, you might as well pop into the... More

Lovely small museum on a beautiful campus. Was lucky to catch the last day of the exhibition which was very enjoyable. Staff was knowledgable and friendly. Really enjoyed my visit.

We like small museums. They offer the opportunity to enjoy great art without the wearying expanse of their big urban cousins, They also acquaint us with artists whose work may not be known to us. The Bowdoin College Museum of Art offers a fine sampling of art from their permanent collection and, currently, a special show of artwork depicting night... More

I am spoiled by living so close to this museum and also because admission is FREE. I try to see the special exhibits during the year, but any day at this lovely museum is a day well spent!

The main attraction at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art this fall was "Night Vision:Nocturnes in American Art, 1860-1960." It was extremely interesting to see how a variety of artists depicted scenes, indoors and outdoors, in the darker hours of the day. There were plenty of other exhibits to enjoy also, my favorites being "To Instruct and Delight" and the... More

Great little museum on campus. Has some masters on loan for the night vision exhibit. Was a great mix of photos and paintings and transitions between the two. Arctic exhibition in the building next door is a must see if you are here. Parking may be a little hard to find but well worth the effort!

The Night Visions exhibit was wonderful. But the permanent collection was disappointing. Nothing really memorable. The museum may have wonderful works in its collection - someplace - but they weren't on view.
