This old mansion built in stages from a humble traveler's inn in the 1790's became the home of the wealthy Wade Hampton's of South Carolina. It was bought from them by a Scotsman named John Burnside for a cool million dollars in 1850 and turned into a money-making sugar cane plantation that survived the Civil War and was the largest... We visited Houmas House Plantation while staying just down the road at Bocage Plantation B&B. Houmas house is a private home. The house and gardens are definitely not to be missed. It is amazing that the owner actually opens his home and art collections for public viewing but we are extremely grateful for his generosity. Susan, our tour guide was... More

Located only a few minutes off of I-10. $20 per person for house/garden ticket. ($19 AAA). Excellent guided tour of house. Photos inside are allowed. The house has been enlarged and modified during the years and was stripped of furnishings and millwork in this century. The current owner has carried out a masterful restoration and you see the house in... More

Well set up attraction, informative staff, lots to see. Thought the $20 / head admission was a bit steep but it's a quality attraction. More

The whole experience was amazing. From the front gate to our last goodbye was unforgettable. Everything here is first class -- house, gardens, shops, restaurants, wine bar -- and not to be missed. And .. future plans make it a "have to visit again" destination. More

Like most tours, to really enjoy it, you must have the proper tour guide and Penny was the Tops. She could answer more questions, knew more info and really cared about her customers...Great tour, original artifacts and all, beautiful place and the gardens are impeccable... rated on a 10 point scale, i give Penny and the establishment a 20!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband and I visited Houmas House for the first time this past weekend, and we're so glad we did! Our tour guide was a wonderful black lady who has worked there for years and gave us a tour that included much trivia along with the normal factual information and history. She also gave us details on how slaves passed... More

I expected a tour that would include the history of the people living on the plantation... the plantation owners, their children, the lives of the slaves working on the plantation. I expected to see artifacts from their daily lives, the furniture, the decorations of an original plantation house. What I got instead was an absurd tour by a sycophantic tour... More

We visited 4 plantations but this is the best. It is like travelling back in time. The gardens are magnificent. The lady in charge of visitors was so nice. In other plantation they often wait to have many visitors to start the visit, but not in this one. We were the first early in the morning so we had a... More

If you have time for only one plantation tour, be sure to see Houmas House. The gardens are spectacular year round and are worth the extra admittance fee.Be sure to take a few minutes to sit on a garden bench to soak up the beauty of the grounds or sit in the rocking chairs on the front porch and pretend...
