The privately owned cemetery is open to the public during posted hours. There is a guard stationed at the entrance so very safe & well maintained. Outside of an arboretum we have never seen such wonderful tree specimens. There is a chapel, a pond & yes, a cave on the grounds. There are headstones that date back to the 1700's... More

I decided to pay a quick visit to this cemetery to kill time before my flight back home. I was a little disappointed, because this is not a place to be visited quickly; it's rather expansive. However, the security guard at the front gate was very friendly and happily gave me a map of the grounds. I walked around for... More

This is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country. My family is buried here along with many dignitaries. I remember going here with my parents and feeding the swans that frequent the lakes inside the cemetery. Plus, the trees and landscaping are amazing and well-kept.

We spent about 2 hours walking the cemetery and reading the stones. The grounds are HUGE and beautifully maintained.

Seems weird to take a fam trip to a cemetery but this cemetery possess not only history lessons but breathtaking headstones & mausoleums Many freemasons buried here Stop at gate & get a map it helped finding some of their frequently visited spots Something we learned: During Civil War the US Government purchased 42,113 sq. feet of land for 25... This is the largest cemetery I've ever visited. I have a few relatives buried here and I've been visiting a few times a year for more than 20 years now. It's definitely easy to get lost in this place, it's like a maze. The map (or experience in my case) makes it easier to navigate. I used to bring the... More

A security guard stopped me on the way in to inquire about why I was there. That was a first for me, but I told him that I love to photograph old headstones. After he made sure I was not a professional photographer, he handed me a map and explained how to get around and back out of the cemetery.... More

Cave Hill Cemetary is THE historic Cemetary & the place to feed the ducks! Fifty five years ago my mom took me here to feed the ducks, as The Louisville Zoo did not exist. I slipped on the mud and fell in!! That is an experience I will never forget!! True story. Visit the Cave Hill Cemetary and make history... More

Locals take their children here to visit the relatives (dead ones that is) and to feed the ducks and geese at the large lake. The gatehouse has maps of some of the more interesting monuments and you can travel around by car, but do get out and walk around. There are older military sections for both Union and Confederate troops,... More
