Description: Horse Racing's Living History Museum! At Old Friends, the non-profit...
Horse Racing's Living History Museum! At Old Friends, the non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, KY, the horses may not be racing anymore, but they are winners everyday. Founded in 2003 by former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen, Old Friends cares for more than 135 horses across three states, many of them stallions whose racing and breeding careers came to an end. A "Rural Hall of Fame", the farm welcomes visitors to get up close and personal with such stars of the turf as Breeders' Cup Champion Gulch, Belmont Stakes winner Sarava, millionaire gelding Arson Squad, and many more. Hear their stories, meet them in person...Er..Horse. Our guests come to visit a few ex-racehorses, they leave having been touched by the heart of a Thoroughbred hero. Tours are daily at 10:00, 1:00 & 3:00 with a reservation.

Old Friends is the ONLY facility in the world dedicated to retiring stallions. One does not to be necessarily famous to be retired here! Michael and his AMAZING staff of volunteers, professional vets, farriers etc., work an incredible bit of magic in the care of these magnificence animals. Michael will tell one and all that the horses don't have a... More

By paying for a tour, you are contributing to the care of these regal horses who gave their prime years to the Thoroughbred industry. It's refreshing to see multi-million dollar winners enjoying their earned retirement and observe their unique personalities. The horses greet you like an big friendly dog begging for biscuits or relishing a scratch behind the ear. You... More

My mother brought us here for her grandchildren and we all loved it. It was so interesting to hear stories from famous race horses and even getting to meet some of them! We love it.

We arrived a few minutes late for the last tour of the day and they were nice enough to include us. We were able to view and pet a large number of beautiful horses anywhere from 7 years old to 30+ years old. We learned a great amount of history about horses and got to see several legends as well... Tour starts off in a little house turned gift shop. We arrived just before our tour time so we didn't look around a lot. We drove back to the barn/farm area from there and started our tour. Our guide was friendly and knowledgable. She let all of us feed carrots to most the horses that we stopped to visit. It... More

Everyone enjoyed the tour and learning about the horse's past! Especially loved meeting Silver Charm and walking around such a beautiful farm. Suggest hats and cold water on a warm day.

My girls loved it! My husband enjoyed the history of the farm and the horses. Nice way to spend the day. Wonderful to see this non-profit in action. Lots of love there to go around to these retired champions.

If you like horses, Old Friends is worth a visit to be sure. Aside from the opportunity to interact with some former Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Preakness Stakes winners, you will get to see some beautiful horses close up. The staff quite obviously enjoys what they do and have a great love for these animals. You never feel like... More
