Horse Racing's Living History Museum!

At Old Friends, the non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, KY, the horses may not be racing anymore, but they are winners everyday. Founded in 2003 by former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen, Old Friends cares for more than 135 horses across three states, many of them stallions whose racing and breeding careers came to an end. A "Rural Hall of Fame", the farm welcomes visitors to get up close and personal with such stars of the turf as Breeders' Cup Champion Gulch, Belmont Stakes winner Sarava, millionaire gelding Arson Squad, and many more.

Hear their stories, meet them in person...Er..Horse. Our guests come to visit a few ex-racehorses, they leave having been touched by the heart of a Thoroughbred hero. Tours are daily at 10:00, 1:00 & 3:00 with a reservation.

Upon the advise of a worker at the local Best Western motel, we booked the tour at 'Old Friends' and are glad we did. Neither my wife nor I are very knowledgeable about horse racing or race horses in general but it really didn't matter. The whole experience was informative, enlightening and even touching. The stories of these horses are... More

This farm is heaven on earth for retired, thoroughbred race horses. Although we missed the tour, we indulged ourselves in their wonderful gift shop. Something for everyone who loves horses!

On a very cold Sunday we had a great time seeing some amazing animals and meeting the wonderful staff at Old Friends. We were a bit early for our tour but that was ok the five cats in the gift shop were wonderful. The ladies who work there are really knowledgeable and truly care about taking care of these retired... Old Friends is an honor to visit. A tribute to retired athletes...racehorses who have earned a retirement for the champions they are! Anyone in the Lexington, KY area must take the short drive to visit Old Friends. Take the tour! Pet the horses! Experience the love and emotion that the founder and the volunteers have for these horses! This farm... More

Please do yourself a favor and go see this place and please make a donation. It is a cheap tour and these horses have given so much and are just amazing! I took my 84 year old in laws and they LOVED it. Amazing stories from our guide about the horses and where they came from. It was just amazing!... More

Outstanding guided walking tour of the Old Friends Equine Retirement Farm. We learned about the history of selected thoroughbred race horses out of the 140ish thoroughbred on the farm. Besides learning fun facts, we were able to feed carrots to these retired athletes. Very touching stories.

I was spending a long weekend in Louisville, when I decided to take a day trip east to Lexington. I drove along viewing the horse farms found on a map available at the Lexington Visitors Center... and then I saw an ad about Old Friends. As a dog rescue owner, my heart called out to visit them. It is such... More
