My husband an I visited the Old State Capitol on a recent trip to tour historical locations in the area. This was the last tour of the day and we were the only people on the tour, which was nice. Our tour guide loved the history of Kentucky and was very knowledgeable about events that occurred, not only in the... More

It was worth it waiting for a guided tour of the Old State Capitol. This 1830's era Greek-style building has been restored to its former glory, although much of the original furniture has been removed. The guide was excellent at recreating the parts of the building that are missing, and putting life into the historical rooms. Of particular interest is... More

Kentucky is a bit unusual in that they have preserved both the old Governor's mansion and the old Capitol, as well as (obviously) the current and substantially more decorative current ones. The old Capitol here can be seen quickly from outside, but the inside is available by guided tour only, and you have to walk a block down the street... More

As Canadians, we often take advantage of the opportunity to visit a U.S. state capital to gain an understanding of the state's history. Frankfort is one of the most walkable and interesting of U.S. state capitals. Its setting in the valley of the Kentucky River surrounded by steep hills, its scale as a small town and the foresight of its... More

Self guided, and had nice displays. The attendant was helpful and answered our questions cheerfully.

Good to see that the building is still functioning and in use. Seems to be in a better location in the heart of town near other businesses and restaurants, as opposed to the new Capitol which is in a residential area.

As others have pointed out, this review is about the OLD State Capital and yet some reviewers have added photos and comments about the newer state capitol which has another review page. The OLD state capitol, having been built around 1830, is actually the third permanent capitol constructed on the public square. The other two burned down in 1813 and... More

We just were driving through Frankfort, KY and stopped by the Capitol to take some pictures. It was Fall and the giant Sundial was filled with beautiful flowers and shrubry. Didn't go inside but, still got some great pics. Otherwise, there is really nothing in Frankfort, KY.

A beautiful example of classical architecture set right in the middle of the city. In contrast with the current capitol, this building is smaller and more intimate -- a reflection of an earlier time when public policy decisions were simpler. But a brief walk through the building and more time to reflect brings to mind that this was the center... More

We enjoyed a great tour with a knowledgeable guide at the old state capitol building. Tours depart from the Historical Society (Clark Center for Kentucky History). A small fee at the Clark Center allows admission to the history museum (at the Clark Center), the old capitol building (1/2 blocks down the street) , and the military museum (about 3 blocks... More
