The Spencer contains what is perhaps one of the best 15-20 university art collections in the country. The museum's founders wanted to offer students a geographically and historically broad sampling of the art of many cultures, many centuries and they succeeded. Most of the art is deliberately not organized by period or origin and the result can be some fascinating... More

As an art student at KU, I have a special place in my heart for this museum, but I really think it is a good one. There are some hidden gems here! Make sure to take the elevator to the next floor to see the old paintings (my favorite).

My kids and I love the Spencer Museum. It is located on the KU Campus directly across from the parking garage. We often go to the Art Museum and the Natural History Museum. Both are free and very kid friendly.

Spencer Museum is a very good university art museum. They have a really nice permanent collection and they have improved they display methods in recent years. Right now the museum is closed for a year long building renovation that will bring in more light and expand patron services. We can't wait to see it late next year

This gem of a museum on KU's campus has a fantastic rotating permanent collection (fully searchable online) and as well as many fantastic temporary exhibitions. They do kid-friendly workshops and other outreach, and they have a teaching gallery for faculty. It is being renovated 2015-16, but any art-lover must stop in: it is a wonderful art museum.

I have visited the Spencer Museum dozens of times, and as one who has visited a lot of university art museums, it is one of the best. It doesn't have the blockbuster single works of a wealthy museum like the Yale University Art Gallery, but it is excellent at fulfilling its mission as a teaching museum. It has works that... More

An excellent community gallery with outreach to local schools. It is heavily used by university students. Some of their special exhibits are excellent. However, their collection is limited. Works on paper is a very good resource, but access is somewhat difficult.

Museum close to the college show cases new talent and new ideas from lasers and lights to photography to graphic design. If you are headed to the theatre or a sports event take the time to drop in. Lied Museum- Spencer Museum of Art-Wheatfields for breakfast. A nice day.

Many universities have art museums but the Spencer is a great family venue with changing art exhibitions in different genres.

Spencer is a high quality museum with many different types of art. We especially enjoyed the modern art. It is easy to get around. Some of the displays are changed. Well worth the time.
