Description: Located in the heart of downtown Sioux City, the Sioux City Public Museum...
Located in the heart of downtown Sioux City, the Sioux City Public Museum features large, colorful exhibits, interactive displays, and much more. Visitors will discover the "Spirit of Sioux City" through a lively 12-minute orientation film in the ornate "corn palace theatre." A variety of hands-on experiences are available including the award-winning "Innovation I-Wall" and "The Big Dig," which replicates an active fossil dig site. Highlights of the permanent gallery are rare Native American artifacts from the area; Sioux City's first "horseless buggy," a 1901 Oldsmobile; a 1930 Kari-Keen airplane manufactured in Sioux City; and a 1918 Mack fire truck similar to ones used by the Sioux City Fire Department. The two-story Disaster and Recovery Wall features multi-media presentations of three major Sioux City catastrophes: the 1904 Pelletier Department Store fire, the 1953 Floyd River Flood, and the 1989 crash of United Airlines Flight 232. Temporary exhibits feature topics of local and regional interest.

I was skeptical about going from reading the description, but this museum is incredible. I though I knew a lot about the area, but I only knew about 40% of the stuff there. The artifacts are Smithsonian quality and the information is amazing!

So much to see at the Sioux City Museum. Sioux City history at it's finest. Great displays. The Dinosaur dig is a must for families with children, they can spend hours just digging. Very informative about Sioux City.

It was a very interesting visit. A great deal of information, displays and outstanding video shows that run throughout the day. Although small, the display about the crash of United airlines flight 232 was very moving. A community that only a year prior made up an emergency plan put it to test on probably the worst disaster any one could... More

We always take out of town guests here. It is a interesting and fun place to go. Check it out and then go to the Art Center.

No, it is not the Smithsonian, but all cities are entitled to have a museum and Sioux City's museum is very nicely put together. It is well set up and offers a lot to see and read. It is obviously more interesting to those from or living in the city itself, and is especially nice for kids. Younger kids enjoy... More

I stopped in because this was top of the list for Sioux City. It was a very neat building for such a small city! Very well designed building, the exhibits were fun. Would recommend more for kids than adults.

This is a well-designed, interactive museum. The exhibits are excellent and informative. The visit begins with an (optional) film that is fun and worth the time. While local history museums can be somewhat drab, this one is not.
