Located in the heart of downtown Sioux City, the Sioux City Public Museum features large, colorful exhibits, interactive displays, and much more. Visitors will discover the "Spirit of Sioux City" through a lively 12-minute orientation film in the ornate "corn palace theatre." A variety of hands-on experiences are available including the award-winning "Innovation I-Wall" and "The Big Dig," which replicates an active fossil dig site. Highlights of the permanent gallery are rare Native American artifacts from the area; Sioux City's first "horseless buggy," a 1901 Oldsmobile; a 1930 Kari-Keen airplane manufactured in Sioux City; and a 1918 Mack fire truck similar to ones used by the Sioux City Fire Department. The two-story Disaster and Recovery Wall features multi-media presentations of three major Sioux City catastrophes: the 1904 Pelletier Department Store fire, the 1953 Floyd River Flood, and the 1989 crash of United Airlines Flight 232. Temporary exhibits feature topics of local and regional interest.

FIVE STARS to the Sioux City Public museum and their Corn Palace Theater. Very impressive 3D with a great sound system, techno-graphic documentary on Sioux City history. Chief War Eagle to river travel, the flood to the start of the cattle industry, prohibition, the war efforts, booms to busts. We were greeted upon entry and pretty much escorted straight to... More

While visiting my aging parents in my hometown of Sioux City, we have now, on three occasions, visited the Sioux City Public Museum in downtown. And we've enjoyed it each time we've gone. There is so much rich Sioux City history there, and for me, having grown up there in the 50's through the 70's, its like a walk back... More

This is a free museum and is well worth the trip. I've been to this museum several times but the most recent was right around Halloween. There was a great display for Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos). That's one of the great things about the Sioux City Museum is there are displays that change and some that... More

Many people have suggested this as a great place to visit and now I can see why. Great history and story telling with very engaging exhibits. Interactives are easy to use and some are quite imaginitive! I am told they change their temp. exhibits frequently and have many programs. All this fun and free....although they have a cute donation cow... More

We had a good time wandering around and checking the different displays. I especially enjoyed the local Native history and information. It's definitely worth going and spending a couple hours.

There is an interesting collection of material pertaining to the development of Sioux City and vicinity. If you are interest in history, it is a good place to spend a couple of hours.

This is a must do, even if you are a resident. Loved seeing familiar things from my childhood , and all of the old machinery.
