Description: Located in the heart of downtown Sioux City, the Sioux City Public Museum...
Located in the heart of downtown Sioux City, the Sioux City Public Museum features large, colorful exhibits, interactive displays, and much more. Visitors will discover the "Spirit of Sioux City" through a lively 12-minute orientation film in the ornate "corn palace theatre." A variety of hands-on experiences are available including the award-winning "Innovation I-Wall" and "The Big Dig," which replicates an active fossil dig site. Highlights of the permanent gallery are rare Native American artifacts from the area; Sioux City's first "horseless buggy," a 1901 Oldsmobile; a 1930 Kari-Keen airplane manufactured in Sioux City; and a 1918 Mack fire truck similar to ones used by the Sioux City Fire Department. The two-story Disaster and Recovery Wall features multi-media presentations of three major Sioux City catastrophes: the 1904 Pelletier Department Store fire, the 1953 Floyd River Flood, and the 1989 crash of United Airlines Flight 232. Temporary exhibits feature topics of local and regional interest.

Great museum! I stopped in on my way through town, expecting very little. Instead, I was really surprised at the quality of the different exhibits. They have plenty of Native American displays, a bit of natural/geological history, a very informative fire fighting exhibit, and some nice artwork. Highly recommend!

If you want to learn about the past, this is the place to go. I would allow at least 3 or 4 hours to be able to tour the whole museum. It has some exhibits that change from time to time. There is gift shop, also, that has t-shirts and other souvenirs.

My wife and I were in Sioux City for an event. I took a walk and easily found this little downtown museum. It all begins with a short movie. A must see in my opinion because it sets the tone for all that follows. I learned about the booms and busts of the area. How Sioux City was one of... More

The displays were well laid out for easy access to all exhibits. There was an eclectic assortment of memorabilia throughout the building.

Great museum with frequently changing exhibits. A lot of interesting regional and local history. A wonderful place to take children. Be aware some of the exhibits are non restricted so children do need to be monitored. It is large and at least one day should be set aside to see this well run museum.

They had some really cool exibits, like the restored old dump truck and road paver. I also really enjoyed the short film they had about the history of Sioux City. It was in a cool decorated theatre and was also sort of multimedia with props and whatnot. If you like museums I would definitely recommend this one!

I was skeptical about going from reading the description, but this museum is incredible. I though I knew a lot about the area, but I only knew about 40% of the stuff there. The artifacts are Smithsonian quality and the information is amazing!

So much to see at the Sioux City Museum. Sioux City history at it's finest. Great displays. The Dinosaur dig is a must for families with children, they can spend hours just digging. Very informative about Sioux City.
