The story behind The Freedom Rock is incredible. Ray "Bubba" Sorensen repaints the Rock in time for Memorial Day every year. He has also started a project to put a Freedom Rock in every county in the state of Iowa. If you go to The Freedom Rock, the story of its origin is in the kiosk next to The Rock.You... More

The absolute love this artist has for this country and the men & woman who serve it, comes thru in every stroke of his brush.

Five of us made a motorcycle run from Winona, MN and joined two friends from the Des Moines, IA area just to see Freedom Rock. Freedom Rock may not seem like much, but the tributes made to those who have served, and especially for those who paid the ultimate sacrafice, can be emotional. A new set of murals is done... More

The lady working at the Chamber at Winterset told us about the rock . We were so glad we went to see it. Beautiful and very moving. What a talented man who donates his time to do it. Impressive.

The original Freedom Rock near Menlo, Iowa is truly a site worth visiting. Take a camera and some tissues, because trust me, anyone with a heart, will have atleast one tear falling down their face! My husband and I have also visited the other county Freedom Rocks that Ray "Bubba" Sorenson II is doing and each time, we walk away... More

Have seen segments on the news about this rock the past few years and have always wanted to go see it. After seeing it again this year, I discovered that it was a little over an hour from where we live. I also discovered that he was painting a rock in each of the 99 counties here in Iowa. The... Breathtaking and the murals on the rock change every Memorial Day. We were traveling with our 3 kids, 14,12 & 8, and even they said it was one of the best things we saw on our trip. Be sure and read the explanations and history of how it was started. Not to be missed

Bubba Sorenson's enormous evanescent artwork is always inspiring, educational, and very patriotic. It is just a short distance south of I-80 at the Greenfield Exit (#86, I think). He repaints the entire boulder every Memorial Day, so if you have not been there recently, it is worth another stop.

Although we went and reviewed Freedom Rock again last year, it was still an amazing work of art to commemorate our soldiers. We particularly were amazed that the green paint contained some of the ashes of fallen heroes. If we lived closer, we would most assuredly go every Memorial Day weekend to view the newly repainted rock. Be sure to... More

Nothing for sale here, no admission fees, free parking, and a wonderful Iowa tribute to the men and women who have served, are serving, and have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Bubba has been painting and re-painting this rock with passion and tears for many years. I went for the first time last year with some motorcycling friends. Now... More
