What did Iowans hope for in 1848? The architecture says it all: classical virtues of the republic, enshrined in bright spaces without grandiose trimmings. The modest but solidly furnished offices and legislature halls are grouped around a spiral stair. This is where the people who decided to fight for the Union left their hatracks and inkpots. You walk in and can stroll around as you like. Amazing all the space we now need to conduct the business of the state when this served those needs back in 1849.

Don’t expect people dressed in period clothes giving you an interpretation of Old Capitol. Instead you get to wander through the restored Old Capitol at your own pace. Great care has been taken to be faithful to original furnishings and colors. Descriptions are provided for all rooms and it is left up to you to interpret what it must have... More

Being a student at The University of Iowa, I venture past the Old Capital many times a week. It is a spectacular building from the outside, and the inside is just as nice. If you find yourself in Iowa City, it is definitely worth checking out.

Old Capitol is right next door the Natural History Museum and they complement each other very well. There is no parking for Old Capital, however there are streets nearby to park on with a parking meter. The kids I took here loved all the history and being able to look out the windows on downtown Iowa City. It was a... More

The iconic dome of the Old Capitol is the symbol of The University of Iowa but don't stop there. The inside of the building has been restored to the way it was when it opened as Iowa's Territorial Capitol. The stairway is amazing and a photographers dream. No admission and well worth the time to go see it and the... More

Love going through the building and looking at the first capitol of Iowa. It is neat to see how the government was first setup in Iowa. Love the different chambers and different aspects of the building.

The Old Capitol Museum in Iowa City is a major site to visit for those interested in Iowa history and the history of the frontier as it existed in the Midwestern US in the 1840-50s. A National Historic Landmark, it has been returned from later uses by the University of Iowa to a period museum that highlights it original use... More
