We did not go in here, but the grounds are very beautiful to walk around or just hang out. It is very easy to get to.

Often the scene of programs staged by the University, the Old Capitol is regal in its simplicity. Designed by John Francis Rague, an architect involved with buildings in Illinois and Dubuque, Iowa, the Old Capitol stands on the hill near the city center of Iowa City and is impossible to miss from any direction for blocks.

The Old Capitol is a museum of Iowa in the 1840s, with rooms set up as the Governor's Office, Law Library, etc. The old Senate and House chambers can be visited and are in occasional use for university functions. There are well-curated temporary exhibits as well. Plan on a visit of one to two hours.

This building has incredible history, and has been amazingly restored. No visit to Iowa City and the University of Iowa is complete with a stop at the Old Capitol.

This is a beautiful picture of the Old Capitol in the middle of the pentacrest. Take a visit inside they give free tours all day long and they are actually quite interesting!

History can be interesting and captivating, but not if it happened in Iowa City. No exciting double crosses, deadly earth changing battles or struggles for imperial supremacy here. Just a lot of Iowans deciding how to put a fair price on hogs and a bushel of corn. Although Iowa did lead the way in women's rights and admission to higher... More

Was a great place to walk around with elementary aged children. We did not do the guided tour, but it was open to view self-guided, which was better for us due to our children's ages and attention spans. It's definitely worth a stop.

I love coming to the Old Capital with my two young boys. It's a beautiful old building, kept in excellent condition. The exhibits are really interesting, and occasionally, the museum will have additional limited-time exhibits (for example, one on the life of Edgar Allan Poe was very fascinating). I've come here several times with my boys when we happen to... More

I, unfortunately, am not able to comment on the Old Capitol's interior because its hours were far too limited. I planned to see the Old Capitol on a mid-afternoon on a Friday only to find that the interior closed at 3pm. While I am largely at fault for not checking the exact hours in advance, I'm somewhat disappointed that the... More
