Although we went there so late around sunset, but me and my family had so much fun there ! So some animals and saw a completely different view of the city.

Lots of hiking only biking is on the park road. The day we were there the bugs were ridiculous making hiking impossible.

Nice hiking trails and view of the river. Some trails are quite hilly and the trail to the Julien Dubuque Monument has a set of 48 steep steel steps you have to go up. (You can access the monument area with a shorter walk using the road.) There were a LOT of mosquitoes and gnatswhen we were there and it... More

This was a surprise area about 5 miles south of town. It gets its name from the fact that this part of the U.S. was under Spanish rule at the time it was first settled and it was a lead mine area. It's in the middle of a nature area and not only has the history of the area, but... More

The facilities are left mostly to their own demise and there are few to no facilities. The best statement is rustic but with a wonderful view of the Mississippi river (not overly photographic view). To get to the best view you must climb (not for the faint of heart) or drive up a small road to the located at the... More

Maybe the best kept secret in the Dubuque area. It's like entering a different world from the surrounding area, including dramatic views and amazing trails and green spaces. It's like going to a really nice state park. Don't miss out on the views of the Mississippi and take in the information on the signs which tastefully adorn the trails. There's... More

It has really nice landscape and a few really nice valleys and hills but the length of the hiking and biking trails are just not that long from 1/2miles to the longest was 3miles. Also for kayaking the creeks you can go on aren’t that long either longest I went on was about a mile if not less but I... More

I took my mom to Galena, IL for a quick winter getaway. We enjoy outdoorsy activities year round and seek to find local hikes in the areas we visit. The Mines of Spain is a lovely recreational haven that is easy to get to and nicely secluded from the nearby towns. Despite its seclusion, it is conveniently located and very... More

PROS: free; beautiful area; ample parking; beautiful views of the Mississippi River. CONS: can be difficult to find Julien Dubuque’s grave; TIPS: make sure to disregard the first parking stop with Julien Dubuques foot trail- it entails a lot of stair climbing, uneven terrain and can be difficult for kids and adults that are out of shape.
