The wife and I decided to go to the Mines of Spain for a picnic and some hiking. There are lots of great places to go eat but we went up by the burial site. There was a great view of the river. From there we went to the nature center and looked at the exhibits. There are not a... More

This park is absolutely beautiful. There's no fee for anything here. There's many trails and picnic areas. I would recommend the memorial to Dubuque's founder which offers excellent views of the Mississippi and definitely the Horseshoe Bluff trail. Although it's quite a hike getting there, the views of the canyon are amazing. This is great for anyone who loves the... More

During the nice days this is worth a trip, great hiking trails. Interesting history. You can take your dog to most places.

My wife and I like Mines of Spain. The hiking is great for the most park, and the park is filled with history and good scenery. Yet there lacks something in Mines of Spain that great parks such as Effigy Mounds, Yellow River State Forest, Pikes Peak State park, Backbone State Park, and Wildcat Den State Park possess: great natural... Great place to hike, see wildlife. Great view of Mississippi and beyond. The view is even great for a gay man like myself, watching others of the like too.

A great place for spending some time with nature... On our last trip to Dubuque, we decided to check out the area, and weren't disappointed. The trails we hiked were great, and my favorite was the loop near the interpretive center - the old farm / vineyard relics were neat to see. The overlook near the Julian Dubuque Monument is... More

The Mines of Spain Recreation Area seems like a wonderful place to be in the Summer or Spring. However, I would not recommend going here while there is still snow on the ground. It made it difficult to navigate (all of the signs are somewhat confusing and poorly placed). Eventually, we reached the small museum portion of the park and... More

the drive thru this park was beautiful; and the view of the Mississippi River from Julian Dubuque's grave site is absolutely impressive

This is a great place to get away for the afternoon, and offers a large group of trails to choose from. You can opt for an easy jaunt, or a more difficult climb up the hills for some beautiful views.
