One of my favorite places to hike, the Mines of Spain offers many paths that make return trips great. It showcases beautiful views and such a serene environment so close to the city. We drive up to different entry points and always hike down and back up for an hour or more of fun in the sun!

We drove into Mines of Spain when we first arrived, before checking into our nearby motel. We did not spend much time there, but it is a beautiful area, and the view from the Julien Dubuque Monument is wonderful.

Definitely a beautiful place to go for a hike. If you're not able to hike, it's also a scenic drive.

On a beautiful summer day my friends and I set off from Galena to DuBuque, IA to hike and drive through the Mines of Spain state recreation area. Who knew two hours later that we would still be attempting to find the visitors center? If you follow the directions on your gps or google maps you will be directed down... More

Mines of Spain is a fantastic area to hike, see the burial place of Julien Dubuque and see the Mississippi River from both above looking down and other places up close. Great time of the year to hike and see a variety of rare plants is Spring or fall. This is an area largely untouched and unspoiled. Wander off trails... More

A short walk to great overlook of the river...and the burial place of Julian Dubuque. There's no charge, and plenty of parking.

This is a relaxing place for family walks and hikes with your dogs. You can hike farther in the woods, stay on groomed trails or relax on the waterfront. In the Spring, if you are lucky, you can find morels. Summer around the 4th of July is a wonderful time to pick some blackberries. We enjoy fishing in the creek.... More

Out of all the outdoorsy things to do in Dubuque this is by far my favorite.. JUST BEAUTIFUL. My kids and I love to walk the trails and see the amazing views. The cliffs are breath taking. This really is the place to visit.
