The gift shop is a little dated but the staff was very welcoming. The cave had stairs and some narrow areas so they cannot accomodate wheelchairs. However, for most people the tour is pretty easy walking. Bring a camera because the cave has a fair number of calcite formations. If you like commercial caves this is worth a stop.

This little cave may not be the largest, or the most flamboyant, cave you'll ever visit, but boy, is it cold, and on a hot, muggy summer day in Iowa, it is a pretty good use of your entertainment dollar. Your little spelunkers will enjoy scrambling through the cave-- don't forget a jacket!-- and rooting around the gift shop for... More

Crystal Lake Cave is so COOOOOL! Literally! You will walk through this wonderful cave and enjoy every moment of the twists and turns and drips and formations. It is a "gem" in NE Iowa.

PROS: Accepts credit cards; 1 person bathrooms outside; overflow parking on the side of the building; available sluice for gemstone/fossil hunting; Wide variety of stalactites and stalagmites seen inside the cave; the lighting inside the cave is adequate; our guide Kevin was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic – he entertained questions without hesitation; he made touring the damp, dark, low, narrow... Husband and I stopped on a whim and so glad we did! It was a rainy day and we were looking for stuff to do. Well let me tell you. This is a MUST see if you are in this area! Very informative guide...even if he did tell corny jokes. Lots of interesting stalactites and stalagmites. Not for the claustrophobic... More

We were a little apprehensive about this tour because the cave is privately held and not part of a state or national park. I'm so glad we went! The tour guide Kevin was friendly and knowledgable, and encouraged questions. The mineral formations are very beautiful. It's cool and damp in the cave (duh, right?) but most people who can walk... We took our grandchildren here a few weeks ago and we had a wonderful tour of the cave. The tour is guided by a very nice well-versed person who takes you through the pathways and points out things of interest. It is cool of course and some water on the ground so do not wear good clothes or shoes there.

I have been to a few caves in my time but wanted to let the children see the world under our feet. The staff were friendly and the guide was upbeat and interesting. The cave itself was nicely presented with a good deal of history and interesting facts.

This was a nice cave to see. The formations were very small but it was ok. Our guide was good and spoke loud and clear for the group to see. Some spaces were tight with low ceilings. It is a steady 52 degrees in there year round, but since it was hot out, it felt good and we didn't need... More

I like the cave itself and it showed some very interesting things and how people lived back in the day.
