Annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. It is the true heartbeat of the Midwest, unequalled and unduplicated. The Iowa State Fair, the inspiration for the original novel “State Fair” by Iowan Phil Stong, three motion pictures and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, is without a doubt the country’s most famous state fair. National media frequently rank the Fair as one of the top events in the country. In 2004, USA Weekend named the event the #2 choice for summer fun in America, topping New York City’s Times Square, Cedar Point Amusement Park Resort in Ohio and Disneyland in California. Midwest Living magazine named the Fair one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience.” The Fair is also included in the New York Times best-selling travel book 1000 Places to See Before You Die and the subsequent travel book, 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before you Die. We just returned from 12 days of camping at the Iowa State Fair. We visited the fair for part of each day. It is an amazing event -- with something for everyone. From Little Hands on the Farm for toddlers on up to a myriad of events for teenagers, adults, and senior citizens. There are hundreds of animal events from... More

One of the good state fairs . . . all the usual agricultural exhibits and products, lots of good places to relax in the shade, nice gardens, quilts, foods, multiple entertainment stages, and more. There are interesting old buildings, some of them dating from a century ago, and friendly information staff at the kiosks located here and there on the... More

I visited the Iowa State Fair with my family two times this year (we live two hours from Des Moines) and absolutely loved it both times! We go every year and my kids start talking about going to "The Fair" several months in advance. I have four young children and we still managed to stay happy and have fun for... More

So much to do and experience! Check out the maps online before you go to get a feel for where everything is located. First year that we utilized the online itinerary planning link on the web page. That was a huge help so we knew what was happening and where of the top things we wanted to see. The food... More

Friday night(8/15/14), my wife and I, met our oldest son, and his girlfriend, in Clive, Iowa. Our plan was to meet them, and get a set of tires from him, for my other truck, and attend the Iowa State Fair. We had a pretty good time there. Went to see Eric Pasley in concert, and then went country dancing at... More

My daughter and her family live in Des Moines -- moved there 10 years ago. My first trip to the fair was in 2005 and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I have not missed taking a trip to visit in August since then just so I make sure I get to go to the fair. It has everything you think... More

My family all descended on Des Moines for a family reunion and trip to the Iowa State Fair. It has been decades since a few of us have been to the Fair. It lived up to our memories. We saw a free concert on Friday with fireworks and everything lit up. We ate everything we could on a stick. We... More

Another year of the Iowa State Fair is in the books, reaching over 1 million visitors again this year! Had my corn dog, lemonade, cheese curds, and Chicken Lips (saved all my carbs & calories all week for an afternoon of Fair Food, and it was so worth it.) Then, my evening was lit up with The Swon Brothers, what... More

We visited the Fair again this year on our annual family visit to Iowa. The Iowa State Fair is the best fair in the country. Lots of fun exhibits and thing to do. Plenty of free entertainment stages as well. Most if all, some of the nicest people you could ever meet. It's simply the best!

We had a really good time, but next time we'll rent scooters so we don't have to walk so far. I know that the scooters are a pain in everyone else's hind ends, but we both would have been able to go and see a lot more if we would have had them. Would love to go back. And maybe... More
