Description: The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event...
The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event in the state of Iowa and one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country. Annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. It is the true heartbeat of the Midwest, unequalled and unduplicated. The Iowa State Fair, the inspiration for the original novel “State Fair” by Iowan Phil Stong, three motion pictures and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, is without a doubt the country’s most famous state fair. National media frequently rank the Fair as one of the top events in the country. In 2004, USA Weekend named the event the #2 choice for summer fun in America, topping New York City’s Times Square, Cedar Point Amusement Park Resort in Ohio and Disneyland in California. Midwest Living magazine named the Fair one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience.” The Fair is also included in the New York Times best-selling travel book 1000 Places to See Before You Die and the subsequent travel book, 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before you Die. Don't make the mistake of thinking this is just the State Fair - they do a terrific job of having other things going on throughout the year. Junk Jubilee, Flea Markets, dog shows, dirt track racing, and so on! The grounds are well kept too.

I've been to state fairs all over the country and none of them compare to the Iowa State Fair. It's by far the best! Buy your tickets in advance of the fair at local grocery stores and you can save a lot of money. Speaking of money, make sure you take some cash with you. Most of the fair food... More

This is truly unique experience. The fair was great this year. The weather cooperated and that was a plus. It has gotten to be that you are unable to see it all in one day. We plan on making the trip to the State Fair again next year. Great family fun!!

There is a reason the Iowa State Fair is listed as one of 100 must see before you die! This is another multi-generation thing for our family. We like to park in the Dean Street neighborhood and enter at the South gates. Easy access to the barn exhibits! The Big Boar, little kids can milk a real Jersey cow and... More

I went there last weekend for a gun show. The on-line information did not give the venue. However, the Fairgrounds had great directions including placement of big signs and plenty of parking. They even let me pull up to the 4-H building to load some heavy items that I otherwise would have had to tote over 500 yards.

We have been to several state fairs, Indiana, Kentucky. I was really impressed with the Iowa state fair. The people were really nice, the fair grounds were clean, prices were not bad at all, attractions were plentiful. The parking can be a challenge if you arrive later in the day. Exhibits were interesting but I guess what was most surprising... More

A family of 2 should be able to go to the fair, not the midway, for $100. Nope. Food takes up all of it. C'mon, it's hot dogs in corn meal and $6? Water, $5? The fair needs to take greater control over the prices charged especially the for-profit booths. As a family, I'm not sure we can afford to... More

If you like fairs, this probably is one of the best if not the best. Variety is the key word, there is something for everyone at the Iowa State Fair, including a lot of walking (rides are available as well). There are air conditioned attractions as well as areas where you "enjoy" the Iowa August heat and humidity. Food is... More
