Annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. It is the true heartbeat of the Midwest, unequalled and unduplicated. The Iowa State Fair, the inspiration for the original novel “State Fair” by Iowan Phil Stong, three motion pictures and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, is without a doubt the country’s most famous state fair. National media frequently rank the Fair as one of the top events in the country. In 2004, USA Weekend named the event the #2 choice for summer fun in America, topping New York City’s Times Square, Cedar Point Amusement Park Resort in Ohio and Disneyland in California. Midwest Living magazine named the Fair one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience.” The Fair is also included in the New York Times best-selling travel book 1000 Places to See Before You Die and the subsequent travel book, 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before you Die. My child goes through Little Hands on the Farm, teaching them about farming and they get to buy a product at the end. See animals, new fair foods on sticks, rides, music concerts. Lots of fun things to do with the family and lots for free with your paid admission!

Everything on a stick, Snickers, sausage, Twinkees, eggs, pork, corn, you name it! A huge place filled to the brim with fun, food, family, friends, and tallent to the top. Animals with wings to horses and thing, a butter cow that doesn't moo, yet it will delight you to see so much yellow on one massive fellow.

We took our nine year old son to the State Fair for the first time this year. He said it was like being at Disneyland but more people. We enjoyed all the different food that was available. We rode the chair lifts to the far end of the fair to save on walking. My husband and I went to the... More

I was there for the Iowa State Fair. I am not sure why they allow the farmers to basically have little parties going on in the cow and horse barns. We had to walk around the party guests to get through the barns. I was also saddened by seeing a cow with an injury to its tail (skin removed at... More

The fair was great this year. The weather cooperated and that was a plus. It has gotten to be that you are unable to see it all in one day.

We have the best State Fair in the Nation. It is easy to take advantage of early discount tickets for entry. The bus shuttles run from free parking locations so there is no need to drive and park at the fair. There are many free stages offering entertainment as well as big name bands and entertainment. There are food/beverage choices... More
