Description: The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event...
The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event in the state of Iowa and one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country. Annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. It is the true heartbeat of the Midwest, unequalled and unduplicated. The Iowa State Fair, the inspiration for the original novel “State Fair” by Iowan Phil Stong, three motion pictures and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, is without a doubt the country’s most famous state fair. National media frequently rank the Fair as one of the top events in the country. In 2004, USA Weekend named the event the #2 choice for summer fun in America, topping New York City’s Times Square, Cedar Point Amusement Park Resort in Ohio and Disneyland in California. Midwest Living magazine named the Fair one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience.” The Fair is also included in the New York Times best-selling travel book 1000 Places to See Before You Die and the subsequent travel book, 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before you Die. Ok I'm starting off by saying I am bias towards the fair - I am from Iowa. But this is a great place to see the very best that Iowa has to offer. The free shows are sometimes better then the paid ones - my husband & I saw Dierks Bentley for free - before he hit it big. So... More

If you enjoy watching crowds, seeing and being around a variety of animals, machinery, farm and home products, agriculture and horticulture projects - all or some of these - you'll enjoy the Iowa State Fair. Lots of free shows - check on times, locations and shows so you hit the ones you'll enjoy. Maybe the quilts, 4-H displays and photography... More

Iowa State Fair is known for the unique fair foods, farm animals, entertainment, the midway, farm equipment, art displays and much more. Check out the Iowa wines and while you are there, try your feet in the grape stomping. You could walk away with a ribbon. In the past years, the grape stomping has been free. If it rains, there... I have gone a minimum of 6 days of ten for 30 years of music, friends, and beer. It is a great time to run into friends you have not seen for a year, see farm animals, eat evil foods, and just hang out.

The Iowa State Fair is a lot of fun and is a true taste of the Midwest. There is a lot to do and the fairgrounds are very well kept. I highly recommend it!

The Iowa State Fair is an experience not to be missed. There is so much to offer, the butter cow, food on a stick, and vendors for days. Explore around for a full day. A fun filled day of good family fun.

Wouldn't miss this annual event for anything! Great food, entertainment, exhibits, and everything else- you name it! The Iowa State Fair does it best. And I don't even mind that it is kinda pricey$$!! It is worth every penny. Last year the State Fair recognized the need for food and drink in all price ranges and they implemented a value... More

The grounds are well kept and neat. There are enough restrooms available at different points on the grounds. The air conditioning in the main building is fabulous. Enough space was allocated for each exhibition. It did not feel too crowded in the large hall, however the areas for the different speakers could have been bigger, some people had to stand.... More

The Iowa State Fair has one of the nation's best photo competitions. But if you want to see some truly amateur photo that are truly amazing, go to the 4-H building and look at the photo there. There is anything you would want to eat and a few thing you might wonder who eats that. A real good place to... More

We always go the first Friday! Not dirty and trampled yet. We get there in time to grab a beer and head for the grocery bagging contest. Corny? Yup but fun! Always the Varied Industries building even when not shopping for anything. I don't know why I put myself and husband thru it since it's always packed. Cultural Center, KCCI... More
