Description:

The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event...

The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event in the state of Iowa and one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country. Annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. It is the true heartbeat of the Midwest, unequalled and unduplicated. The Iowa State Fair, the inspiration for the original novel “State Fair” by Iowan Phil Stong, three motion pictures and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, is without a doubt the country’s most famous state fair. National media frequently rank the Fair as one of the top events in the country. In 2004, USA Weekend named the event the #2 choice for summer fun in America, topping New York City’s Times Square, Cedar Point Amusement Park Resort in Ohio and Disneyland in California. Midwest Living magazine named the Fair one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience.” The Fair is also included in the New York Times best-selling travel book 1000 Places to See Before You Die and the subsequent travel book, 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before you Die. There are a lot to see and do for everyone. Great entertainment for kids, and adults. The fun rights were a highlight for the kids. Was great to look at the prize vegetables and the Butter carving winner. So many animals, cows, pigs, horses, etc etc. Food, a lot of food on the stick. It was a fun outing.

This is one of my favorite Iowa things to do! We always bring family and friends from out of state, and they are wowed by the foods of course, the size of the grounds, all the people, and activities for all different ages and interests. The great horse shows in the Jacobson arena, the llama limbo contest, pigeon rolling, baby... More

This is automatic. Just go. It doesn't matter from what part of the world you come from the Iowa State Fair is a bucket list type item. This is Americana at its best. Be sure to attend at least 1 full day. Night and day are night and day, try to experience both. Just wander the fairgrounds and hit every... More

If you are visiting Iowa in August the State Fair is a must see. There is something for everyone. Even if you aren't a farm the ag exhibits are fun, interesting and educational. See the Grand Champion pig, he's huge! Check out the beautiful horses and all of the judging. See how it's done. Everyone is friendly and willing to... More
