Annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. It is the true heartbeat of the Midwest, unequalled and unduplicated. The Iowa State Fair, the inspiration for the original novel “State Fair” by Iowan Phil Stong, three motion pictures and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, is without a doubt the country’s most famous state fair. National media frequently rank the Fair as one of the top events in the country. In 2004, USA Weekend named the event the #2 choice for summer fun in America, topping New York City’s Times Square, Cedar Point Amusement Park Resort in Ohio and Disneyland in California. Midwest Living magazine named the Fair one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience.” The Fair is also included in the New York Times best-selling travel book 1000 Places to See Before You Die and the subsequent travel book, 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before you Die. I go every year and love to look at the livestock, 4-H exhibits, Cultural Building arts, crafts and photography. It is wonderful to share with children and friends. The pork chop on a stick from the Pork Producers, the turkey leg from the Turkey Federation and watermelon cups are my favorite foods to eat. We almost always ride the Old... More

Absolutely love fair time. Walking around checking out the variety of things to look at and trying the new foods on a stick each year is a blast. Usually go a couple times just to enjoy as much as I can. Im a big country music fan and they tend to bring in good acts each year at reasonable prices.... More

I was raised going to the state fair. I won my first prize in a drawing. I went on my first date and have taken all my wives since then to the fair, they never met! It's the best fair in the world. The food from the beef to the pork. Entertainment to suit all ages and contests for everyone.... More

All of the food is delicious and worth the money. I'm hungry now just thinking about it. The rest of the fair is fun too of course. The food is just my favorite thing there.

C'mon, you go to the State Fair to watch people right? They are having a good time being part of one of the best fairs in the country. This is agriculture showing off at it's finest. Forget your diet and call yourself corn fed when you leave. It may seem like any other fair, but this one has a history.

As a disclaimer, I was born and raised in Iowa but I have lived from coast to coast. I love the Iowa State Fair and try to go back every few years if possible. It can be seen in a day but it is a long day. There is something for everyone. The livestock pavilions are well set up and... More

Our first time visiting the Iowa State Fair. Friends live in Des Moines and invited us for the w/e to take in the State Fair. We absolutely loved. First of all it was a fabulous day weather wise. The crowds were huge, the food booths were too many and the buildings were chalk full of wonderful displays. We walked the... More

Come see the fair that the Rogers and Hammerstein Film was based on. If you can eat it on a stick, it will be there. There are also good family meals that are done by the livestock pavilions and the Lamb Kabobs by the sheep barn are very tasty. Even city kids love to climb in the cabs of the... More
