Description: Open to visitors since September 2009, the John and Mary Pappajohn...
Open to visitors since September 2009, the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park features artwork by 22 of the world's most celebrated artists. The 4.4 Acre park, located within a major crossroads of the urban grid, creates a pedestrian friendly entranceway to downtown Des Moines. This accessible setting, coupled with the skilled landscape design and caliber of the art, makes it unlike any other sculpture park in the United States. The Pappajohns' contribution of 28 works for the park is the most significant donation of artwork ever made to the Des Moines Art Center.

The park is easily found, clean and inviting. Great place for family activity or just a walk. The sculptures are interesting and mostly, big! Weather pending, good place for picnic. It can be visited in under 30mins if you're in a rush or enjoyed for couple hours. Parking is on the streets around, with meters.

The sculpture park is a great place to wander, people watch, and enjoy some interesting sculptures. No, of course you cannot climb on them as they are expensive pieces of art. But there is an audio guide you can download on podcast or you can use the printed guide. Here is a link. Try the art center, science center, Bass pro shop and the botanical gardens. Downtown is a nice place to... More

Thank you for taking the time to provide some feedback. We’re sorry you didn't enjoy your experience at the Pappajohn Sculpture Park. For the safety of both the sculptures and our visitors, we don't allow the works to be climbed on. Your suggestions of other places to take children are fantastic ideas though—we would recommend Blank Park Zoo as well! More

We wandered through the park and really enjoyed the unique sculptures. My only wish is that there would be more information available at each piece so we would know the name of the art and the artist.

We're so glad you enjoyed the Sculpture Park! Thanks for stopping by for a visit. Next time you're exploring the park, keep an eye out for the silver sculpture plaques with information about each piece along the exterior sidewalks. They're easy to miss but offer some helpful info as well as the number for our Sculpture Park audio tour, which... More

We love to visit the sculpture park - it's one of my favorite places in Des Moines. It's a great opportunity to expose the kids to art, and let them run and have fun. Anytime we have out of town visitors , we take them here. Free, thought-provoking, and scenic in its downtown setting.

Artwork is interesting and varied, but limited parking. It looks varied at different times of the day when light hits the pieces at different angles.

Thanks so much for the kind words! We're glad you enjoyed strolling the Sculpture Park. If you ever have trouble finding parking in the future, there is a small public lot on the southwest corner of 13th and Locust. Hope to see you again soon! More

The sculpture park is a must see and do in Des Moines. You can walk through the park in the Western Gateway of downtown Des Moines. Lots of great modern artists's works are permanently displayed. It is next to the library and several restaurants.

Coming from St. Louis, I had to stop by Des Moines' Sculpture Park. I haven't spent a lot of time exploring St. Louis CityGarden but must say that I think this park may come in ahead. I really enjoyed the variety of the sculptures and the layout of the park.
