I love visiting state capitol buildings and this one did not disappoint. Loved all the marble throughout. The grounds are particularly interesting as there is a war memorial for pretty much every war, praising all Service Persons, especially those from Iowa. One thing I really loved about the building is that they let you into the Law Library, which is... More

Well worth the visit. Tours are free and very informative. Such a wonderful and beautiful building inside. Lots to see. This is my second visit here and I learned new things.

OK, we were kind of surprised that that the #1 attraction in Des Moines is the capital building and did not initially have it on our lists as things to do. However we had some extra time during a recent trip for the AAU Jr Olympics and decided to go. It turned out to be a good choice. Pretty amazing... More

Visiting Des Moines for a weekend and wanted to see more of the city. Took a tour of the Capitol Building which I had never seen while living in the state for 3 years. Knowledgeable tour guide not only walked us all over the place but had fascinating history and trivia to share along the way. Just the way a... More

Fascinating building and a suitable example of the best Classical and Greek Revival architecture of the late 19th century has to offer in the Midwest. The murals, grand staircases, First Lady doll collection and model of the U.S.S. Iowa are all accessible without the tour but make sure to find out the times and take a guided tour with one... More

We enjoy touring the US and have visited over 20 state capitols but this must be the nicest with the best tour The building is unusual and access to the Governors office was appreciated. The Law Library is spectacular as is the dome visit A special mention to Bill our guide who kept both children and adults entertained with stories

We went mostly to see the beautiful law library, buy ended up taking the whole tour. It wasn't all that interesting to my toddlers (surprise, surprise) but I just hung out towards the back or walked around with them as needed. It was a pretty casual tour and the guide tried to include the older children.
