We went mostly to see the beautiful law library, buy ended up taking the whole tour. It wasn't all that interesting to my toddlers (surprise, surprise) but I just hung out towards the back or walked around with them as needed. It was a pretty casual tour and the guide tried to include the older children.

Growing up in Des Moines I have been in the Capitol 100 times. Since its restoration a few years ago, it is more awesome than ever. Every guest I entertain gets the tour of downtown that has to include this building and grounds. When I saw the national Capitol in D.C. it was a letdown because it is a bit... More

If you have the time, it's worth taking a guided tour - takes about 1-1/2 hours. Our guide, Julie, was wonderful. She was very friendly, professional, knowledgeable and patient. The building is absolutely gorgeous.

I've visited quite a few capitols but this one is definitely one of my favorites. It was wonderful to walk around inside this historic building.

The Iowa State Capital is a terrific stop if you're in Des Moines. We have now been to 39 of our Nation's state capitals, and this one was among the best. Interesting architecture and many displays inside (large model of the USS Iowa) and memorial sites outside all around the state house. Recommend highly!

The capitol building is simply stunning. I've had a number of international guests and they were very impressed by the architecture and beauty of the decorative painting, sculpture, and mosaics. I recommend that you take the time to take an actual tour, which will include such gems as the old supreme court chambers with carved bench, the governor's office, both... More

We stopped at the capitol building one morning during a recent trip to Des Moines. We arrived on a Saturday, shortly after the building opened for the day for visitors. The parking lots were almost empty, so parking was no problem. We entered at the basement level; however I stupidly didn't realize that it was the basement: I thought it... More

This is the 7th state capitol we've seen, and by far the most magnificent. Five domes, one covered with gold foil, and massive columns highlight the outside. Inside is all marble and mosaics and paintings and fine paneling, all in massive sizes. Make sure to take the guided tour so you can see all of the otherwise locked rooms.

This is a GORGEOUS building and I highly recommend taking the free, and short, tour! I was shocked at the artistic details in this magnificent building.

The Iowa Capitol Building is pretty awesome. The gold leaf dome is visible from a distance or from a 60 mph drive by on I-235. I had time for just a quick dash through. I liked the spiral staircase up to the viewing gallery of the house. Do not miss the library for more spiral staircases. The 18 foot model... More
