I really enjoyed the visit at the capital building of IA, especially taking the tour with narratives. It was informative and the building was restored to its glory beauty!

Great tour of this beautiful building. Great statuary on the grounds, but found it odd that there was little inside, except around the rotunda. As part of the tour group you were allowed to ascend a level and get a great view down at at the rotunda where a large flag is stretched across. Beautiful research library with winding staircases... It is fun to visit Des Moines as all top attractions are "free" (excluding seasonal fairground). There is a free guided tour, need to pass security check point as in any state capitol tour. - As usual, all state capitol ceilings are beautiful. - As an added bonus, check those interesting "mosiac" paintings. It is "optical illusion" but it is... More

The tour was fun and educational, and at a good pace beautiful architecture, and amazing history, kind of a long walk from downtown hotels but we had a shuttle from ours.

Beautiful building -- truly deserves the unofficial title of the country's most beautiful capitol. The law library is not to be missed -- my 13-year old granddaughter actually gasped when we first entered. The surrounding campus has many historical and meaningful monuments, memorials, and sculptures. Landscaping on the west side is very well done, and gives a wonderful view of... More

It was nice to walk up the steps and get a good view of this beautiful building. Very centrally located to other tourist attractions. I'm glad we decided to take a walk around, it was very nice.

I didn't even know that the Capitol Building was open for the public, so I was happily surprised when I touched the door and it opened. Friendly security and service people and even a tour guide who seemed to know everything about the building. My tip: Just do it - and remember to admire the cielings!

This is by far one of the most exquisite buildings I have ever seen. Rich with artwork, architecture, historic displays of days gone by and the law library is out of this world. The visitors’ center were extremely informative and very friendly. Definitely worth a visit.

The Iowa capitol building is immense, recently restored, and staffed by most gracious and knowledgeable people. Well worth a stop.

Pros: The Capitol is absolutely beautiful and has so much history. If you go on a (free) guided tour, you have the option to climb to the dome and also get a history lesson. The tour is about 90 minutes. If you can't go on the tour, then you can still go snoop around the building (after you go through... More
