I have enjoyed my time at the Surf Ballroom. Whether it's a concert (Robert Cray, Alice Cooper, Jane monheit, beach Boys, Tom Jones, BB King, Kevin Costner ...ect) a wedding, High school prom, school field trips or perhaps the Winter dance party. The Surf is a historical venu that can not be missed. This is s must see in North... More

The Surf is a fun museum and ballroom that hosts a variety of events throughout the year. I've seen everything from Pink Floyd cover bands ("Think Floyd") to Willie Nelson in this place. The intimate space means that anywhere in the Surf is a great view for whatever band you are seeing. The only people who might not enjoy are... More

If you have a chance to attend the Winter Dance party, don't pass it up. Great music, fun dancing and friendly crowds will be found. Join in on this 'classic' celebration of great music each February. Celebrate the music icons of the '50s.

What a wonderful, historic gem! We had a busload of investors on our way to Omaha from Minnesota for a 3 day trip and made a stop at the Surf for a tour. This place is simply fantastic with its fascinating history. It's not all about the tragic last concert of Buddy Holly and others, although that in itself is... More

Always a good turnout with good music from the 50's - 60's. A tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson, the "Big Bopper." February of each year we gather to celebrate the music of the first decade of Rock & Roll. It does get a bit crowded, but is worth it.

Every summer we visit relatives in Iowa and plan excursions to places my relatives often haven't seen themselves, including on this day the Surf Ballroom. With 3 kids ages 13, 15, and 18, 3 women and one man and a senior it is saying a lot to find a place that everyone enjoyed as much as this. The music lovers... More

Historic venue that is kept clean. Coat check for $1. Museum to wander through if it is open. Staff friendly. Two bars for drinks. Large ballroom surrounded by booth seating. Nice stage. It is a great place and worth a visit.

My wife and I took a day trip to Mason City and Clear Lake. We had always wanted to visit the Surf and it surely was worth the trip. The Surf Ballroom is actually the second one, the first was across the street and burned down in 1948. It is restored to look the same way it did when the... More

The Surf Ballroom is one of the last ballrooms in the area. They host a summer Big Band series, bringing in the big bands playing the music from the old days. So much fun to dance to In The Mood and many other favorites of the era. Great wood floor to dance on. Also is the last place Buddy Holly... More

This is a must see!! We stopped at the ballroom first and what a pleasure it was. When you walk in it's like stepping back into history. Everything has been restored beautifully. For a small donation (suggested $5) you can walk around and explore all the historical things that happened here. Go on the stage that so many artists and... More
