We took the weekend dinner train excursion. The food was excellent and the servers did an outstanding job. The scenery on the train is very good. One tip: Please remember to leave a tip for the waitstaff on the table. Since the dinner is included in the prepaid price of the excursion, many people forget to leave a tip, and... More

I love the smell of steam and coal. Ok I like the old time scenic railroad rides. The Steam engine was made in China but the sounds and smells are from a bygone era. This is a part of our history.

Fun, sort of hokey, good scenery, and makes you thankful that today's travel is a bit more upscale. Kids may get bored after awhile as they are often wanting to be doing "something." Long enough ride for what you see and do.

A must. Railroad history is fascinating for anyone wanting to learn about our historic roots. Here you will find a museum and theater that brings the history of rail to life in a great way. But the highlight is getting on a train and riding the rail. A lot of options for longer or shorter trips.

We went over Memorial Day weekend for the desert train. We were really impressed with the train and the views were incredible. We drove over from WI and I kept joking that the only trees in Iowa were alone the train route. The best part of the train was the observation deck, it was awesome to go out over the... More

We bought a Groupon for the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad including the museum. We stayed in a nice, clean Super 8 on the outskirts of this picturesque town north of Des Moines.

Just did the dinner train this past weekend, 4/20/15. It was awesome!!!! The train was so much fun. The staff was funny, friendly and very knowledgeable. The views we saw were incredible. Went out on the back/rear deck as we went over one of the highest (oh boy it was high!!) train track bridges in the US, it was breathtaking... More

Trip wasn't a total disaster, as we made the best of a poor situation. Went on the Valentines train, was not informed we would be sharing a table with another couple, but they were nice and we had a little fun. There was absolutely no heat in the train the entire trip (literally freezing), scenery was mostly Rural Iowa trailers... More

I took a trip in the fall and it was a fun, slow-paced experience. It's not something to do by yourself but the people running this train obviously love what they do, and it's a real joy to go through the woods, by the river, and over the High Trestle Trail Bridge in a slow moving train. The scenery is... More

My wife and I took the steam engine train on a Saturday. The engine was acquired from China and is the last steam engine produced by the factory there in Datong, China. The route is a round-trip lasting about an hour and three-quarters. The price for us was $20 apiece. A fun ride.
