This 1964 church is hexagon shaped with communion table in center; has a150' central spire; mostly concrete & glass structure. Definitely different & impressive design!
We took the Columbus city tour, where an interior tour was the first main stop. One of the claims is that this Eliel Saarinen church was the spark that started modern architecture in the US. We cannot dispute or confirm this, but you can see many amazing innovations that he applied here.
Hard to believe that this church is 60 years old! It was the first "modern" church built in the United States - designed by Eliel Saarinen. Worth a visit; it is across the street from the Visitor's Center.
I was married there. The organ resonated beautifully and the atmosphere peaceful in this old church.
This building was designed by the elder Saarinen, and looks as fresh and vital as it did when it was erected 70 years ago. the tapestry represents jesus' "sermon on the mount" in matthew 5'7. it stands along the right wall in the sanctuary and is surely a wonderful sight.
One of Columbus, Indiana's architectual gems, enter on the side during weekday and take a peek inside. The bell tower is quite an amazing addition the church. Architecture fans a must see!!
