For both the train buff and child, this museum is not so much a museum as a gigantic collection under multiple "barns". It contains a very large selection of trolleys and interurban trains from the Chicago area. Each barn contains a large variety of equipment with very unique items scattered throughout. Most impressive was the Nebraska Zephyr train set. The... More

What do you do with a four-year-old who refuses to get on Thomas? Well, if you are one of the conductors, you take the time to gently convince the boy to take a ride. That the boy refused is no fault of the conductor's. I was impressed that the conductor took the time. Indeed, I found the whole day to... More

This event is well thought out and so well organized, totally geared for families with young children. There is plenty to do, spread out enough to manage the crowds but small enough to make it doable. Our group had 4 grandparents, parents with a 1 and 3 year old. Souvenirs are pricey but the food and drinks were very reasonable.... More

Excellent train museum. Is laid out almost like a little city with streets and rail crossings. Great for adults and children. Many buildings full of trains - both cars and engines. Have electric trollies that run a big circle around the entire grounds with unlimited free rides included in price of admission. You can get on in one area and... More

Judging from the other reviews, maybe we just hit this place on a bad day. The do have a tremendous collection of rolling stock, however, you can only walk by the majority of it, without being able to get higher and look inside, which may not matter since most of the train cars did not have inside lighting. One building... More

We used to take our kids to the Illinois railway Museum back in the 80's, we thought it was great then, excitement for the kids and memories for Mom and Dad. Well we took our4 year old Grandson on a beautiful day that just happened to be Diesel Day. That means they had all their diesel rolling stock out and... More

9 barns of equipment and memorabilia--some poor lighting, but otherwise well-kept. Missed trolley ride, but trolley looked inviting and interesting. Station well-kept with clean bathrooms. Done by volunteers, so well-done!

This was our second time visiting in two years. Attended with the grandkids and their parents. It happened to be "diesel" day and we got there in time to see the diesel locomotives on parade . It was great. Lots to see and very clean grounds. We'll be back

This is by far the largest railroad museum in the USA. They have many operating locomotives and rolling stock and many on display as well. When we went they got the nebraska zephyr out of the barn and we rode in the observation car. We literally spent the entire day at this museum and it is totally worth the admission... More

This was indeed the largest display of trains and locomotives that I have ever seen! They even fire up the locomotives and move them around so that the place feels realistic. The trains date WAY back and also into the modern era. It's an attraction good for young and old and certainly family friendly. Highly recommend this place!
