Illinois Railway Museum

Great place for the whole family. Walk around and see trains and train cars that go back through history.

Went up there for the Annual Thomas and Friends Event. The organization was dire. Whether that is the company that runs Thomas or the museum; the museum should still be exacting higher standards. If you are British and ever saw Phoenix Nights attempt at a family day for the grand re-opening this is how this place seemed. Cheap, poor value... More

We went to the Railway Museum for a Day Out with Thomas and we had fun with 6 adults & 3 kiddos (5 mos, 1.5 yrs & 4 yrs- the 4 year old enjoyed it the most). When we first arrived, we noticed all the extra activities they had set up for the kiddos. Things like temporary tattoos and toy... More

I spent about four hours exploring all the tracks and barns. The collection emphasizes the electric interurban lines and rapid transit, but has representative equipment from steam and diesel roads, too. it is nice that much of the equipment is inside, but too bad that much of it is only visible from ground level right next to the item--you cannot... PROS: amazing array of different trains; you can ride certain trains every weekend; you can enter some of the trains on display CONS: expensive admission, the train ride itself was uneventful as there were no sights to see- you just go forward then the train reverses back to the station.

When I considered going to this event, I heard mixed reviews. Well, we all had a great time. It wasn't very crowded and there was quite a bit to do to keep a toddler busy. My little one learned a new word....."Thomas" and we heard it about a million times today. The museum was nice too if you're into trains... More

Last year we went to see Thomas the train, we had no idea what to expect. We got there mid morning and we were so pleasantly surprised. We were able to rise Thomas the tank engine. My son was almost 3 years old. He was so excited that Thomas was talking to him. There were lots of activities for kids... More

Fun day. We rode the Zepher, no air conditioning, but very nice. Took the old red street car (I remember from when I was very young) and of course the green hornet as we called them. They also had a new display of plates from the trains that I remember too. They added some more benches to sit a rest... More

This was my first visit to USA and this museum was on the top of my bucket list. If you are researching this museum then I would assume you have some degree of interest in Railways/Railroad or you want your children to have a first hand experience of Railways. In either situation you must not give this place a miss!... More
