The Illinois Railway Museum is a great museum for train lovers of all ages. Many modes of transportation represented, from trolleys to bus, steam to modern diesel. Lots to see. Trolley and train rides are available on the weekends. There is a nice little restaurant there with a pretty good menu including burgers, dogs, brats and ice cream. There are... More

IRM has one of the most extensive collections of railroad and trolley items in the Midwest. Just about an hour west of Chicago, this jewel of a museum is a must for any fan of trains. Trolleys operate around a circle in the museum, making it easy to get to different exhibit halls. There's a 5 mile "mainline" where they... More

We had a fantastic time, spending all day riding trains, exploring the exhibits. So many things to see and do! Staff very friendly and helpful. At night beautiful to see things lit up. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute and would go back again! A wonderful way to spend the day with friends and family!

Nice place to see old trains and street cars. Many from the CTA in Chicago. Lots of old locomotives.A few buses too. You can even get a ride on an old train or trolley.

I have been going to the Illinois Railway Museum since the early 90's and is one of my favorite places to go annually. I regularly take out of town tourists here and they are always pleased with their visit. Extremely dedicated staff and a great variety of trains. Much larger that one would originally guess. I love trains and riding... More

This was my second visit to this amazing place. It was the museum showcase weekend so there was a lot going on. Many of the buses, streetcars, plus a few trains were active. Most notable ones active included the Nebraska Zephyr and the Frisco steam locomotive plus some diesel locomotives and electric ones at all. There was so many items... More

I went there with my friends and family, with the mental state of being like a little boy. Thought I would see a bunch of trains and that would be fun. Boy, was I wrong. The detail of the place ranks with something out of Disney. Old train crossing signals, the amount of craftsmanship, and explantion was mind blowing. I... More

Much larger than I expected. Most of the tourists quickly walk through the train barns, ride on the "demonstration railway", then leave. But, there's much more to see and learn. Each of the locomotives and cars on display has a placard detailing the history and purpose of that particular item. It takes time to read these but the descriptions add... More

My family visited the Railway Museum for a Day Out with Thomas. We didn't purchase tickets in advance so we had to wait in a semi long line to get in and see what times were available to ride Thomas and Percy. I recommend doing this online next time to save time and also getting tickets for both at a... More
