I've heard about this museum many times in the past but only recently decided to make the trek out there to check it out. Our 2 year old is completely into trains right now so we thought he'd enjoy seeing the trains up close and personal. Well, we were completely right, he absolutely loved it and didn't want to leave!... More

We went during the annual Thomas the Tank Engine event. This was our 2nd year going, and it was again wonderful. Aside from all the Thomas stuff, they have lots of trains to look at and ride - everything from a few minutes to a 45 minute ride out into the farmland. The staff is friendly, facilities are clean and... More

This is a little unknown place tucked in between corn fields.. The grounds are clean and spread out. This is a great place to visit for people that have the love of trains! There are all kinds of railroad trains to explore and even some you can go into depending on the day. This was the day that the trolly... More

I went with my kids (2&4) for the Thomas event. Very nice overall experience, however I was very disappointed for the Thomas ride. We bought 3:30 pm tickets, however we showed up at the 3 pm ride because the kids were getting very tired. I asked 3 people (I was sent from one person to the other) if I could... More

If you like history and trains this is the place to go. I little bit of drive from the Chicago area BUT well worth it.

The Illinois Railway Museum isn't just for rail buffs. The facility is quite large, and nearly always has some kind of railway car operating, usually at least a trolly. We visited on what was a slow day, but still the exhibits were interesting and well curated. This museum has some items in its collection that may not exist elsewhere, so... More

If you are a parent or grandparent then this is for you. Fun for the whole family. My grandkids (ages 4 and 2) loved riding on the "real" Thomas. Besides riding Thomas, there was a magic show, clowns, tattoos for the little ones, and plenty of history. You could ride on a steam engine or a trolley car, plus more... More

We went to the Illinois Railway Museum from west Chicagoland on a Sunday when the museum was having a special event including many old cars and trucks. So, there was plenty to see and do for couples and families. Lots of people taking photos and videos of the trains in action. As others have said, they have a loop trolley... More

For both the train buff and child, this museum is not so much a museum as a gigantic collection under multiple "barns". It contains a very large selection of trolleys and interurban trains from the Chicago area. Each barn contains a large variety of equipment with very unique items scattered throughout. Most impressive was the Nebraska Zephyr train set. The... More

What do you do with a four-year-old who refuses to get on Thomas? Well, if you are one of the conductors, you take the time to gently convince the boy to take a ride. That the boy refused is no fault of the conductor's. I was impressed that the conductor took the time. Indeed, I found the whole day to... More
