I didn't know how to rate this park as the vistas we could see shortly were beautiful, but the gnats were horrendous (think flying up your nose and into your eyes) -- we were there early June and wearing Cutter deep. People in town told us it was the worst season and recommended another item called bug soother. We had... More

Been in Mount Carroll and Savanna ( June 12- 17). From Sabula, Galena, we stopped for 3 nights in a camper in Mississippi state park.. We had a wonderful stay there. Awesome views of Mississippi River and the bridge to Sabula from different look out points and trails for hikers.

Stopped here on the way from Savanna to Galena. Seems to be maintained quite well, but I don't think the vistas were all that good. Maybe I just couldn't see anything through the cloud of gnats.

We just stayed there June 5th-7th, 2014. Seriously, buy a bug vail if you are going there anytime soon. We ended up going into town and buying fans to move the area around the campfire area and that only made it bearable. We tried to hike and made it only because we were persistent ( with a winter scarf around... More

This park was very big and the sights well worth seeing. Although the knats were bad the trees and coyotes were worth it tree falling in the night quiet was amazing as the commercial says if a tree falls in the forest will someone hear it? I can definitely say yes!

For starters, this is a beautiful park. My husband and I just got home from a weekend camping trip here. There are just a couple of things I wish I had known before we decided to stay here: 1. Apparently this is a motorcycle riding hotspot, not the peaceful connection with nature I was hoping for with bikers rising in... More

Well-maintained picnic areas, roads, and trails. Weekdays are so quiet and beautiful you can really commune with nature.

Park has many overlooks that are a short walk from parking areas with beautiful views of the Mississippi from the tops of the high bluffs. Also many hiking trails along the bluffs. They range from easy to difficult but most have great views of the river. Park map does good job of explaining and showing the trails.
