PROS: interesting history of the area as told by re-enactors; free parking; CONS: may be boring for younger kids as there is nothing to see along the canal- you go forward then you are pulled backwards back to the parking lot. Admission may be expensive for what you get in the tour. Avoid being in the same tour as bus... More

I understand that floods are nobody's fault. However, not revealing that your "mule-pulled boat ride" won't have a mule is just deceitful. I guess this is why the Zerve guy was so adamant that I understand "NO refunds!" before I agreed to purchase. (Really. He repeated it at least 3 times.) Once we parked on a side street and walked... The lock 16 visitor center and LaSalle canal boat are about 1/2 mile from each other. Due to flooding at the time we took the boat, we boarded by crossing a railroad track and following a dirt path. The boat people were very accommodating to our large group. This one hour barge ride is well worth the time. The barge... More

Suddenly everyone at the family reunion wanted to eat lunch together after the canal boat ride. I called the cafe and they put together a buffet of soup, salad, sandwiches and dessert for $15. All the food was delicious especially the soup a dessert. Staff were wonderful.

We stopped here as part of the Starved Rock Lodge trolley tour. The place had a small information center with a wheelhouse inside and some native american artifacts and animal skins. I think children would really enjoy it. I believe you can earn one of your scout badges there. There is a nice viewing area of the dam and river.... More

Greetings and thank you so much for providing this most helpful feedback from your visit to the Starved Rock area! I am so glad to hear that you found the Illinois Waterway Center interesting. I find it really neat to compare the modern day lock and dams to the 19th century locks along the I&M Canal where the mule-pulled LaSalle... More

I brought my elderly mother on the canal boat ride and we both had a great time. I love animals so I enjoyed petting Moe the Mule. The docent on the boat really knew her stuff and provided us with great historical information. We got an extra long ride because the captain wanted to check on something farther up the... More

My husband and I were excited to take this boat ride and eating at the Cafe based on the reviews on here but we were very disappointed in the whole experience. We could not hear about 90% of the historical presentation once the guide went upstairs since the microphone was not working or he never realized to turn it on.... More

I often order lunch to go from the Lock because it is within walking distance from my work and has several vegetarian selections, including a daily soup.
