It's worth the climb up the steep stairway to see what's inside this lovely Italianate home built in 1858: an actual lead mine, Civil War memorabilia, items honoring Ulysses S. Grant (including an original painting depicting Robert E. Lee's surrender to Grant), plus other historical articles from Galena and Jo Daviess County.

Learned much about Galena's local history. Kudos for the gallery featuring the efforts of local women!

very nice museum with some terrific art. the best part is that it is empty. not good for the museum but good for the people attending. not much parking but there is not much parking anywhere.

There's certainly a wealth of information here, but if you aren't a big civil war buff, there's not much else for you. I love historic buildings, so I was a little disappointed that only the front 2 rooms held any historical details. The rest has been changed over time. A sketch of the original floor plan would be welcome.

We enjoyed Christmas shopping in Galena and were surprised that most of the shops were also very affordable compared to similar nearby destinations such as Lake Geneva and Wisconsin Dells

Quaint little village with great window shopping. To many restaurants to mentions, each a bit different from the last. but not by much. Fun day to stroll.... eat gourmet popcorn and chocolates.

Quick. Did you know what year Ulysses S. Grant run for President!? Yeah, neither did I until I visited Galena, Illinois (it's 1868 if you were wondering). Located in Jo Daviess County, the historical society isn't at a lack of things to talk about. One of the first things of notice in the Historical Museum is the holograms that appear... More

I love museums, and this was a charming exhibit in a stately home, but we were too restless to stay past the free hologram video. There is a lead mine shaft that I was curious about, but in a group with mixed interests (read that as men who do not always like the sedate experiences) with a $10 admission fee,... More

Great little town to stroll through. Quaint boutiques, lovely art galleries, fantastic gourmet food shops, interesting holiday décor, wine bars, coffee shops, popcorn and candy delicacies, etc, etc. You can easily spend 2 days working through the shops. Walk thru the Desoto house smack dab in the middle of the shopping district where past presidents have stayed. 12-15 minutes from... More

This is a small museum packed with a variety of history. There are artifacts from Grant, period pieces, mining history, dioramas, and the civil war. I think we stayed about an hour and a half.
