Some of my best childhood AND adult memories involve Galena. We went there all the time as kids, sloppily eating caramel apples on the sidewalk. I got engaged at a bed and breakfast there. I had the best day of my life in Galena. I mean...Galena. Touristy? Sure. But charming nevertheless.
We loved this town, the sites, food, people, history. You name it Galena Il has it. If you love history, historic buildings, and National treasures Galenea is a must!!!!!!!
The house itself is very cool! They did a Hologram presentation with President Grant and his wife that was very entertaining. There is also a room you can go in to view an actual Lead mine shaft. Upstairs there are more artifacts from the War of 1812 and the Civil war and artifacts from the early times in Galena. A... More
One expects local "historical museums" to be quiet, dusty affairs, heavily populated with 1920s moth collections and long-departed mayors. The Galena/Jo Daviess Museum, though, shatters such stereotypes with a lively, informative and very unexpected celebration of history. Galena has several sets of steep steps from Main Street upwards. The Museum is one level up (afterwards, walk to the top...what a view!)... More
Amazing holographic introduction to a gem that beat out the Smithsonian to acquire the stunning painting, "Surrender at Appomattox." Folks from history buffs to bored teenagers will enjoy this museum.
If you appreciate history, I highly advise visiting this museum. I feel that the $8/person admission charge was reasonable. The 7 minute movie featuring hologram actor likenesses of Ulysses and Julia Grant is a great introduction to the tour. It houses some very interesting artifacts and short videos of Galena's early mining beginnings, the Civil War and US Grant, including... More
Had the best time ever. Went to places I would never have gone if I didn't take this tour. Love the driver very friendly and helpful guide
My husband and I love galena at Christmas time. It is a beautiful place and if you're lucky enough to be in it while snow was falling it's magical. The shops are fun to walk through and if you get a chance to go to the chocolate shop totally do it it's amazing. The wine tasting is fun to do... More
The most amazing & unusual thing about this museum is the sitting room you will meet Ulysses & Julia Grant! They will talk to you & interact with each other. Full Life-Size Grants...the kicker is they are Halograms. It's just a terrific afternoon's entertainment before lunching @ Embe's on Main!
