It's worth the climb up the steep stairway to see what's inside this lovely Italianate home built in 1858: an actual lead mine, Civil War memorabilia, items honoring Ulysses S. Grant (including an original painting depicting Robert E. Lee's surrender to Grant), plus other historical articles from Galena and Jo Daviess County.

For a small museum, there was plenty of information and wonderful exhibits. A very friendly attendant added info of his own and made it very personable experience. Wonderful original painting of Grant and the Civil War. More than worth the suggested $5 donation

Very entertaining for the money. Good way to spend a rainy afternoon. Especially liked the exhibits upstairs and the Grant hologram.

We enjoyed perusing all the displays and information available at the Museum. Lots of info on President Grant. I learned a lot, I did not know about him. Good choice for a museum.

So much to take in. Learning about Grant, wife and family. Amazing that he was only 5'8" as the photos depict him looking taller. Large paintings, the jewels to see. So many unique treasures to see. Worth the time for a stroll off the main path.

Start with the intro from Grant and his wife - very cute! Take your time looking at the exhibits and you'll see some interesting things. Of course the highlight is the large painting upstairs - a must to see and the crown jewel in the museum's collection - worth the hike up the stairs!

My daughter and I stopped by right after the museum opened. Get there early as parking on the side street is limited. We watched the hologram of Mr and Mrs Grant introduce themselves. We explored where the mine shaft was located and looked at the museum exhibits.

This quirky but wonderful little museum is housed in an old mansion off the main drag, but holds countless treasures and displays. Tries to portray many different facets of Jo Daviess county and Galena, from the drift less aspect (the glaciers passed Galena by and created the very hilly terrain), to the lead mining era, which made Galena more populous... We enjoyed our tour of this museum and learned a lot about former President Grant. There was quite a bit of information available about both Grant and the town of Galena but one had to take the time to read through it. The holographic display on entering was entertaining but not particularly informative, However, the actual displays while less entertaining,... More

Because I was using a walker the day we visited I was unable to take the stairs to see exhibits there; they graciously allowed us to deduct my admission price. Curator was knowledgeable, engaging and clearly (and deservedly) proud; gave us some personal attention which was unexpected and appreciated.

I think this museum has a lot of potential. There are some very interesting displays, but many of the descriptions are too hard to read, what with small print and poor lighting. There was also some renovation going on, which was a bit disruptive in terms of noise and displacement of some things. When we first entered the museum welcome... More
