Traveling from Indianapolis, I had no idea of the amazing change in topography I would witness as I was driving in to Galena. Anyone who enjoys history should really see this museum. It is very informative and great displays available. Small gift shop is there, too.

Lots of information on Grant, but also civil war and it's impact on Galena. Enjoyed the video of Through Lincoln's Eyes. Lots of unique artifacts.

The tour begins with a short presentation, and then is self guided. The museum has lots of interesting displays and artifacts, both about Ulysses Grant and the history of Galena.

The Galena and U.S. Grant Museum, operated by the Jo Daviess County Historical Society, is located on Bench Street, one level above Main Street. It is housed in a magnificent 1800s mansion and provides any and all information anyone needs to recall the history of a town that once had a population of 12,000 and was the second largest town... Wonderful museum covering the history of this old lead mining town. Can't wait to go back next year and do it all over again.
