As I am a fan of August Wilson, I was excited to see Gem of the Ocean at Court Theatre. It was excellent! This was my 2nd visit to Court for a Wilson play (Jitney 2012). Have also seen Wilson's plays in Washington DC (Radio Golf 2009), NYC (Fences 2010) & Tucson (Jitney 2006 & Ma Rainey's Black Bottom 2010).... More

We stayed downtown (The Thompson) and made the trip to the Court Theater on the Univ. of Chicago campus for a Sunday matinee. Very glad we did. It's a small, intimate theater, no bad seats, and the production - "The Good Book" - was great. They offer a unique service: Give them your name at the box-office and they'll have... More

There are few theaters as intimate and powerful as the Court Theater on the University of Chicago campus. There are no bad seats. The low slop design of the audience seating provides everyone with a clear view and good sound from the stage. I saw Iphigenia in Aulis, on of three plays by Euripides that the Court will offer as... I have seen a couple of musicals here including folk opera Porgy and Bess. In each case I thought the performances were excellent. Located on U of Chicago campus it may be off the beaten path for those staying in the Loop who are close to the main theater district, but I think the trip there was definitely worth it.

The Court Theater was a highlight of living in the Hyde Park neighborhood while in graduate school thirty years ago. I have gone back through the years and went again last night to see M. Butterfly. The cast was superb and the intimacy of the theater always a delight. The University of Chicago gives an academic vibe and the audience... More

I have been meaning to visit the Court Theater in Hyde Park for years, and regret that I didn't go sooner. The productions are always highly rated, and the venue is a nice size. This show was "Seven Guitars" by August Wilson. The acting and direction were top-notch. There's not a bad seat in the house. HOTTIX were available, so... More

If you want to experience a casual, delightful venue, see the plays here. The set designs are varied ,yet creatively arranged. The caliber of acting is award- worthy. This little theater has no obstructed seating. As a seasons ticket holder, I am always delighted after seeing their thought-rendering and historic plays. (Be sure to see "Seven Guitars",by August Wilson!) Students are... More

We saw An Illiad at the Court. It was the perfect setting for one of the great shows ever written (a perfect adaptation of a classic work for modern audiences). As for the theater itself, it is an excuse to head to Hyde Park, one of Chicago's great neighborhoods, with wonderful dining and cultural attractions. Charles Newell has built a... More

Happened to be in Chicago and took in 'Tartuffe' part of the Moliere festival. I have seen this play many times, in French and English. It's an undoubted masterpiece but can fall flat very easily. This was the best I have ever seen. Updated to Hyde Park/Kensington and in modern dress (even the costumes were witty), delivered with verve and... More

The WSJ has called the Court theater the most consistently excellent regional theater in the US. Still it is hard to guarantee every show will appeal. It is an intimate 200-ish seat venue. These thing can be said across the board, The acting is excellent, the sets wonderful, the direction superb. The seating is generally comfortable. This theater is located... More

Staying in Hyde Park

Neighborhood Profile
Hyde Park
If you want to get a feel for quintessential South Side Chicago, you have to make a stop in Hyde Park, one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods. This historic area is home to two of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions, the Museum of Science and Industry and the University of Chicago. A stroll here will bring you past vintage and grand hotels converted into luxury apartment buildings; peaceful gardens, parks and green spaces; and ivy-adorned museums and other cultural institutions that speak to the city’s diversity and architectural beauty.
