I went to the Chicago Detours for my grandma's birthday. Our tour guide was Elizabeth. She was very nice and helpful. The weather was miserable so we were glad the tours were mostly inside. (You of course had to go outside to get from one building to another). I went to buildings and places I didn't know were in Chicago... More

We took the architecture tour that includes part of the pedway. It was very interesting. I've taken the architecture boat tours a few times, but this tour was great because you get a look at the insides of the buildings. The Chicago Cultural Center is a must-see! Our tour guide, Paul, was very friendly and had a lot of great... More

We travel to Chicago a couple of times a year, but finding this tour--Chicago Detours--was wonderful. We took the architectural bar tour--pub crawl--and loved every minute. We started at the Tribune Tower and moved down and under to the Billy Goat tavern, which is where all of the journalists hung out. Hors d'oeuvres included a serving of the famous hamboiger,... More

I have done a few architecture tours in Chicago with the Chicago Architecture Institute. I've always been interested in learning about the Chicago Pedway, so I could keep warm if I visited in the winter, so I tried this tour through Chicago Detours. Elizabeth, our tour guide made the tour worthwhile as the sights were ok, but her enthusiastic narrative... More

I took the Chicago Jazz and Blues private bus tour with a group of workmates. I had a great time and learned a lot during the 2.5-hour (approx) tour. The tour guide Elizabeth was very nice and easy to hear. Pros: We visited a variety of places outside downtown Chicago. Interesting neighborhoods. Informative, with video and music clips while on... I've lived in the Chicago area for 44 years, and learned so much that I didn't know about the city in the 2 hour Indoor Architecture walking tour. Amanda was very knowledgeable and the iPad photos and videos were great for a historical perspective. The walking was easy, and we sampled Frango mints. Highly recommended.

Three of us. Maybe 15 in group?Took the Historic Walking Bar Tour. Started on time. Met in the Argo Tea and recvd run down. Tour guide very knowledgeable funny and friendly. Had all of the group names down before we started. Began w Tribune Tower. Talked about tourism not so much about the building. But did do some about it.... More

Came up on a pec way search. While the tour included a short portion in the led way, it was largely about historical architecture. Not bad, just not what we expected. Will try the bar tour next time.

We enjoyed two tours to see some off the path places in Chicago that provided better insight into the history of this amazing city. Our first tour was of the Wicker Park area and its adjacent neighborhoods. The Polish Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church was a real treat to see and helped us understand how strong each Chicago ethnic community... More

This was an architectural pub crawl. We enjoyed our drinks and snacks (some rather elegant), but the insider info we learned about the city and some of its buildings was what made this special. Our guide was well informed and eager to share her insights. It was not a large group, so there was easy back and forth between the... More

Staying in Magnificent Mile

Neighborhood Profile
Magnificent Mile
Over 400 stores pack the concrete along Michigan Avenue, the eight-block stretch known as Magnificent Mile. This area between Oak Avenue and the Chicago River is more a shopping paradise than a full-out neighborhood. For prime upscale shopping, this is the place to go. It’s busy, energetic, and packed with shoppers. You'll also find hundreds of restaurants and dozens of hotels, all on the mid- to high-end scale. Some of the city’s most iconic buildings like the Wrigley Building, John Hancock Center and other architectural marvels define the magnificence of this neighborhood.
