Description: Hills & Dales Estate is the historic home and garden of textile magnate...
Hills & Dales Estate is the historic home and garden of textile magnate Fuller E. Callaway. Located in LaGrange, Georgia. The centerpiece of the estate is a beautiful Georgian-Italian style home built in 1916. Designed by the noted architectural firm of Hentz & Reid it is one of the finest homes built toward the end of the country house era. The home was occupied by two generations of the Callaway family and contains all of the families' original furnishings. Formal gardens surrounding the home and were created by the original owner of the property, Sarah Coleman Ferrell prior to the Civil War. Within the gardens visitors will see many of Sarah's religiously inspired planting including a large planting of the word "God" and her personal motto "God is Love." The extensive formal boxwood garden also feature an herb garden, greenhouse, fountains and garden sculpture. The 35-acre estate, complemented by a Visitor Center containing family artifacts and displays, opened to the public in 2004. In May of 2010 twenty additional rooms on the second and third floor of the home opened for tours.

The gardens on the property have been taken care of by 2 women for over 100 years. The family has a generous background. The house is held by a foundation requested by the owner's so that the public can enjoy forever. It was a very hot day so we were not able to tour the gardens but saw a lot... More

I recently went to Hills and Dales May 22 and had an outstanding time. Originally went to see the house and gardens for part of the day with plans of seeing other sites in Lagrange. Little did we know what awaited us when we arrived at this magnificent Neel Reid palace. I recommend seeing the film in their incredible event... More

This is a beautiful house and garden , Take the time to watch the film in the visitor center on site. Finding out about the Callaway family's generosity made this more interesting, Sue Ellen was a wonderful docent because of her amazing knowledge and love of this place, but all of the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.

This $15 guided tour of the Callaway home and unguided, unhurried tour of the garden is well worth a visit. Along with ample luxurious furnishings and architectural interest among the living areas and nine bedrooms, nine bathrooms, is a third game room with a British pub theme. Fuller E. Callaway, Sr. and his wife, Alice had a good life, but... More

Found this home by accident while passing through Lagrange and what a treat. Residential home of the Callaway family who founded Callaway Gardens. Home is superbly preserved and guide was very knowledgeable with details of the home and history of the family. Three floors to visit along with the greenhouse and the gardens at this home. Truly enjoyed this visit... More

We had an unexpected free afternoon - decided to hear about one of the "first families" of textiles in our country. The tour was splendid and the guide made us so comfortable. The home was exactly as left by last Mrs. Callaway owner in 1998. There are no ropes- you can walk in all the rooms! The gardens are spectacular,... More

This 30 room mansion was owned by one family until it was transferred to a foundation established to preserve it. Family furnishings are intact and lovingly tended. The Italian garden was created by a previous property owner before the house was built.
