The Chattahoochee winds thru Helen, with access to it in many places. We went north of town and stopped at many places along the river. There are steps in numerous places to get you down to the water, and there are rapids frequently along the entire length. Beautiful for photography and just listening to the tumbling waters.

It is a beautiful river in many places but in some not. Five waste treatment plants overflow at times and cause serious pollution. Recent counts of e coli show the levels are more than 200 times normal counts and 35 times the "acceptable" level. Coming in contact with water from the Chattahoochee can cause ear and eye infections, stomach problems... More

We have visited Helen in almost all the seasons, and the river is one of the main attractions for me. We have done tubing in summer and stayed above it in winter, and it is awesome. In summer though, with all the people in it, the water is smelly and dirty around and after Helen, but its pretty pure before... More

The river was just below our condo unit and it was really lovely. With all the rain while we were there it was fast running and looked very cold. We both thought that the tubing in the summer would be tons of fun.

We enjoyed sitting in a restaurant and watching the river and the rafters enjoying themselves. It is a clean, rocky, windy river especially near the area where one rents the tubes. There were spots to picnic outside of downtown Helen near the tube rental area.

My wife and I make an annual OktoberFest pilgrimage to the Helen, GA area. While there are many touristy shops and restaurants in and around Helen, the mountains and the Chattahoochee River create the canvas for one of the best OktoberFest celebrations in the southeastern United States. You can find a restaurant overlooking the River, a park for a picnic,... More

It's a beautiful river this far up (headquarters) even though it gets nasty the closer you get to Atlanta. We love the nature trails and Nora Mill and other places along the River, and go every opportunity we can EXCEPT during Oktoberfest, when you can't MOVE in Helen.

Such a waste of a natural resource not to have more public access to is. Too much private land and not enough federally funded public areas. A real shame to live here and not be able to enjoy it without getting chased off.

this is a really nice river we saw the parts that were all through Helen. We even did some tubing down the river. Got some nice memories of being on the river.
