We've gone to Appalachian Outfitters at least once a year for the past 15+ years--BK and AK (before kids and after kids). The equipment is always in good condition (they sell the older stuff at the end of each season). The trips are more exciting than a lake but not as energizing as whitewater on the Ocoee. It's a good... More

This was one of the best family excursions ever! The staff members, process & price were spot on. AO was very organized, provided adequate parking & their website gave lots of details about the various trips they offered. The best part for me was they answered the phone on the first ring!!!! Would highly recommend this for parents with young... More

Appalachian Outfitters will give you a fun day on the river, whether kayaking, canoeing or tubing. Very easy to get yourself set up and the staff is very helpful and safety-conscious. The Chestatee is a gentle river -- easy to tube or canoe on -- and the water temperature is perfect on a warm day. Tubes are always filled up,... More

We can't say enough about Appalachian Outfitters. They are a first-class operation with a knowledgeable, helpful staff. On their river kayak trips, they provide your boat, paddle, life vest, shuttle to/from the rivers, and GREAT instructions so they you have a safe, fun river float. Their Chestatee River Trip is the very BEST river trip around for beginner kayakers. We've... More

I went with a group of mothers and teens and had a blast. We all used single kayaks and managed pretty well for novices. The water was cool in July making it perfect. The workers were very friendly and they even sold croakies :)

So much fun! My partner was a first time kayaker and a little uneasy in the water. This is the perfect trip for him because the water never gets too deep and the rapids are minimal. We packed a small cooler and pulled our kayak onto a pebble beach to enjoy lunch and swim a little. It was lovely. Service... More

This is a wide, slow river without perils... but you still need to be able to steer. You park at Kelly Bridge Landing, then AO takes you upriver to put you into the water. Go at your own pace, and arrive back at your car accordingly. There is a suitable but primitive (no running water) changing station at the end,... More

We had a group of 4 adults and 5 children under 10 and had little to no experience kayaking or canoeing and were interested in doing the 2-3 hour ride on the Chestatee River. These people were incredibly patient as we toyed back and forth as to whether we go on the river let along take a canoe or kayak.... More

Called ahead to reserve boats for the group of friends I had coming. We were going to put in at 3 pm, which is the last departure of the day. The day of some of my friends had to cancel last minute, but the owner, Ben, was very accommodating. We paddled the peaceful, secluded Chestatee River. It's right about 6... More

The Chestatee River is a beautiful, undeveloped river. The 6 mile stretch takes 2+ hours. It's generally wide open and slow - perfect for beginners. That said, we tacked on the Yahoola Creek portion before entering the river. This section is open dependent on water flow, but is gorgeous and, while not difficult, certainly gives you obstacles to navigate around... More
