Four grandparents and an aunt traveled to Florida, November 2013, to attend the Youth Opera's production of The Little Sweep, in which our 8-year-old grandson appeared. Everything about the opera house is nice, including the interior and the patio. The production was excellent, and exceeded our expectations. The neighborhood is a delight for walking with shops, a nearby library that... More

I subscribe to the Sarasota Opera, so clearly I think it's great. We are so fortunate to have such a high-quality opera available to us in a city of this size. My only complaint is that the winter opera season is so short that in order to subscribe, one must see an opera each week for four weeks, rather than... More

The Sarasota Opera presents about 4 or 5 different opera productions each season, which extends from December to April. For the past few decades they have been engaged in a cycle to present every opera by Verdi, but other operas are also included in each season's schedule. We saw a performance of Verdi's Il Trovatore. The production was first rate... More

This is a seasonal repertory opera, now in session for about 30 years, located by the bay in downtown Sarasota. It's focus is on traditional presentation. The cast is mostly young but the direction and conducting is superb. Generally there are 4 operas rotating in the winter and one in the fall. There are also apprentice and studio recitals at... More

We visited Sarasota primarily to take in the opera. We were very pleased with the performances we saw: Flying Dutchman, Jerusalem, Barber of Seville, and Il Trovatore. they use young (read "cheap") singers, all of whom were competent and several of whom we'd love to hear again. Another reason they can get away without the big expensive stars is that... More

Excellent performances in a lovely restored theater make for a wonderful evening. Seats are comfortable and the super-titles are very well done and convenient to read. Going to the Sarasota Opera is a most enjoyable experience.

My wife and I attended the Barber of Seville at Sarasota Opera last week. They are in a well-restored older building with very good sight lines and acoustics. We were seated in the upper balcony just 3 rows from the back (to hold down the cost), but one advantage of that is you look at the translation screen above the... More

The Sarasota Opera House is beautiful and conveniently located downtown. What a treat it is to dress up and attend an Opera. If it's not in English, you may find yourself looking up at the prompter and down at the stage repeatedly, but it is a worthwhile cultural experience. Tickets are expensive for good seats, and the operas sell out... More

We had balcony seats and you felt very close to the stage. The variety of shows was abundant, we could have seen 4 shows in about a week.
